Located on the Elbe River in Saxony, Dresden has a history and continued rebirth that makes it an essential destination to explore.
You can certainly see Dresden in a day; however, there is so much to learn about the city and the surrounding area. Seema Prakash, who offers walking tours of the city, suggested this four-day expanded tour for travelers wanting to immerse themselves in Dresden’s culture.
Why you should visit Dresden
Many believe that the Elbe slows down as it passes through its beloved Dresden, kissing both banks before flowing onward. You can discover Dresden’s beauty in the lush wine-growing slopes along the river, as well as in the historic center: in squares ringed by iconic buildings, in the tall steeples and towers of its churches, airy cobbled courtyards, and especially in the galleries of its sumptuous museums. After being nearly bombed into oblivion during WWII, Dresden has been lovingly rebuilt and now awaits discovery by discerning travelers who love culture, history, and of course, wine.
Altstadt walking tour
9am – Kick off your Dresden adventure with a leisurely breakfast in Altstadt (Old Town). Options include a buffet spread or delightful pancakes with fresh fruit, waffles, and eggs. For a quick bite, grab a light-as-air croissant at a local bakery.
10:30am – Hit the cobbled streets and historic squares of the Old Town on a two-hour walking tour, and learn how this one-time “Florence on the Elbe” was destroyed in WWII, then painstakingly reconstructed. Afterward, discover the exquisite Zwinger, a sumptuous open-air party pavilion near the palace, built by the colorful ruler Augustus the Strong. While you’re on vacation, take a moment to enjoy a glass of locally produced Goldriesling as you admire the baroque flourishes of this beautiful structure.
Neumarkt for lunch
12:30pm – After your interactive history lesson, head to Neumarkt for lunch. Restaurants here offer hearty Saxon fare such as soured beef roast, crispy schnitzel, and a classic German roulade. An alternative might tempt you with unique Saxon cheesecake or small potato pancakes served with quark, a creamy, spreadable cheese.
Whichever spot you choose, remember to eat light to retain your energy for exploring Dresden’s State Art Collections.
Be dazzled by Dresden’s State Art Collections
2pm – With their astonishing breadth, Dresden’s State Art Collections span 12 museums, providing an unparalleled visual treat. These holdings were amassed over centuries by the acquisitive Saxon royal family. Marvel at Raphael’s Sistine Madonna and a remarkable collection filled with works by Rubens, Rembrandt, and Vermeer. Alternatively, visit the Royal Palace, which combines reconstructed palace rooms and modern museum areas, taking you on a journey through the Renaissance and baroque eras.
Check out Panometer
If museums are not your thing, consider a visit to the Panometer, a former gas-storage tank transformed into a gigantic gallery. A painted, 360° panorama of baroque Dresden alternates with a second showcasing the smoldering ruins of the city after the 1945 firestorm. Each display offers a grand experience, enhanced by sound and light effects.
From Panometer, stroll back through the Grosser Garten (Great Garden), a beautifully laid-out mile-wide park, then visit the Volkswagen Transparent Factory, where electric cars are assembled. Enjoy the high-tech ambiance while sampling some excellent local cuisine.
Stroll the Loschwitz Bridge
5pm – Take tram number 12 to Schillerplatz, then walk to the 19th-century Loschwitz Bridge, known locally as the Blue Wonder, for scenic river views. Under the old trees of Schiller Garden, find a local pub where you can enjoy specialty brews and hearty German fare.
Look for a market in Altmarkt
6:30pm – Before leaving the Old Town, check for any markets happening in Altmarkt. Smaller markets transition with the seasons, offering regional street food, handicrafts, and delightful beverages.
Then, discover the other face of Dresden: the edgy, bohemian Neustadt (New City). Take tram 12 or walk across Augustus Bridge, where you can admire historic architecture and vibrant street art.
Experience Kunsthofpassage
7:30pm – As you explore Neustadt, aim to get lost amid its charming courtyards and artistic displays. Look for Kunsthofpassage, transformed by artists into whimsical streetscapes with small boutiques and eateries.
At 9pm, consider joining a lively pub crawl or visiting shisha bars. Enjoy the unique concoctions at popular local spots, bringing your day of exploration to a pleasant close.
Travel back in time to the “Cradle of Saxony”
Venturing to the medieval city of Meissen is a must. Consider a stop at Moritzburg Castle along the way, an enchanting structure once favored by Saxon kings. Here, you can witness the fascinating history of Europe’s oldest porcelain.
For lunch, seek dining options on Castle Hill, overlooking Meissen’s picturesque rooftops, then take a guided tour of the historic Albrechtsburg, home to Germany’s oldest residential castle.
Enjoy the stunning landscapes of Saxon Switzerland
Finally, prepare for a scenic excursion as you travel to Saxon Switzerland, known for its breathtaking sandstone cliffs and hiking trails. The tour includes fascinating landmarks such as the Königsstein Fortress, offering stunning views and insights into its rich history.
After a fulfilling day of exploration, return to Dresden for a splendid night-time view from Carola Bridge, embracing the charm of this historic city.
