Exploring Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way: A Travel Guide
June 7, 2023 • 6 min read
GoTravelDaily’s social media editor, Deepa Lakshmin, recently returned from a visit to Ireland, where she explored some of the country’s most dramatic coastal scenery. Here, she shares insights and tips for anyone planning a similar adventure.
Arrival in Ireland
I landed in Ireland with zero expectations, ready to embrace whatever experiences came my way. My week in Dublin was primarily for work, meeting colleagues in person for the first time. Nevertheless, I wanted to ensure a bit of adventure, so I impulsively decided to embark on a three-day bus tour along the incredible Wild Atlantic Way to immerse myself in the scenery beyond conference rooms.
Traveling on a Bus Tour
Bus tours have become my go-to method of travel, especially given my tendency to doze off in moving vehicles. Moreover, planning trips in advance is not my forte; I often prefer a spontaneous approach.
This led me to join a Paddywagon Tours bus journey traveling through counties such as Galway, Clare, Limerick, and Kerry. Our guide, amusingly named Cash, added to the vibrant atmosphere of the trip. Since I prefer not to drive on the “wrong” side of the road, this bus tour was the perfect solution to experience all the beauty Ireland has to offer.
Cost and Accommodations
The tour cost $765.79, which included two nights’ accommodation at local bed and breakfasts. While these accommodations were quite basic, they were clean, had hot water, and provided decent breakfasts. The arrangement was straightforward; I turned up and received what was available, which was perfectly fine for my needs.
Comfort Level
On a comfort scale, I would rate the experience four out of five. The newer bus was clean and equipped with charging plugs for my devices. Although I wished the seats reclined more, the bus was relatively empty, allowing plenty of room to stretch out during our five to six hours of travel each day. Frequent stops for food and local exploration kept the trip enjoyable and engaging.
Mornings on the Tour
Every morning was a sweet affair with carrot cake and espresso from various cafes along our route. In Kinvara, 30 minutes from Galway City, I was captivated by Wild Beans coffee shop, adorned with remnants of St. Patrick’s Day decorations. In Adare, the charming pink exterior of Stacpoole Coffee House beckoned me to indulge while I browsed through Ireland-inspired art prints.
Scenic Activities in Ireland
One of the most memorable experiences was visiting Torc Waterfall in Killarney National Park. The surrounding greenery, with trees covered in a vibrant green moss, made me feel like I was part of a fairy tale. This immersion in nature was a refreshing break from city life.
Another highlight included taking a horse-drawn carriage ride through the park. It provided a unique perspective of the landscape, effortlessly navigating areas that would have been difficult on foot.
Local Food and Entertainment
With just one night in Galway City, I decided to follow the sounds of live music through the lively streets of Shop St, indulging in the local pub scene. Each venue was infused with captivating performances from talented musicians.
Don’t miss out on sampling the seafood at McDonaghs. Although I’m not usually a fish-and-chips person, the flaky cod I had was exceptionally delicious, completely free of any fishy aftertaste.
Essential Packing Tips
Seasickness medication is crucial when visiting the Cliffs of Moher, especially if you plan to see them from the water. While the cliffs are a must-see for any traveler, the ocean can present challenges for those prone to motion sickness. Trust me, it’s worthwhile to take preventative measures to ensure a smoother experience.
In conclusion, my adventure along the Wild Atlantic Way offered a wealth of breathtaking views, rich culture, and delicious cuisine. Ireland truly captivates the heart and soul of every traveler.
