Our evening began with sunset views and cocktails at Park in Bairro Alto, followed by dinner and wine at Taberna da Rua das Flores. After a delightful burlesque club experience, we strolled back to our hotel, encountering a stage outside Lisbon City Hall. It was here that we spontaneously began singing a random mash-up of old show tunes—an outpouring of joy inspired by the city itself.

Q&A with Tiago Filipe

Where are you from?

I was born and raised in Lisbon, where I have spent most of my life.

What made you want to become a guide?

My father, a historian, took me on many travels across the country, providing me with extensive knowledge about Portugal. Over time, friends visited me in Lisbon, and what started as a hobby grew into my profession.

What is so special about Lisbon?

Lisbon is breathtakingly beautiful and diverse. You can experience the coast and mountains within a short drive. The longer summer days allow you to enjoy activities like surfing after work, which is simply priceless!

What dishes best define Portuguese cuisine?

Portugal’s cuisine is incredibly varied with numerous dishes to explore. Grilled sardines are popular in June, and we have seafood stews like caldeirada and cataplana. Don’t miss out on our famous pastel de Belém—it’s a treasured dessert.

What are some fun sites to see in Lisbon?

Visit Jerónimos Monastery in Belém and explore the thematic gardens of the Old Expo 98 area, including the stunning Oceanário aquarium. Strolling through Alfama’s charming, narrow streets is a must-do for any visitor.

Is there a day trip near Lisbon you’d recommend?

A visit to the palaces of Sintra is highly recommended, especially Quinta da Regaleira with its mystic gardens and unique architecture.

When is the best time to visit?

October is my favorite month, along with May, which are both excellent transition periods for travel.

Where do you recommend people stay?

I suggest choosing hotels, which generally provide a more hassle-free experience than other accommodations. Consider properties such as Porto Bay and Lisbon Heritage Hotels.

Is there a super touristy thing that one should do?

Taking a ride on the iconic yellow tram is essential. It offers fabulous views and is a wonderful way to explore the city’s historic areas.

Food is truly at the heart of Portuguese culture. Here are some top spots recommended by Tiago for a delightful culinary journey:

  • Explore authentic Portuguese restaurants: Pinóquio and Rosa da Rua are exceptional options with traditional menus. Salsa & Coentros and Ramiro are also excellent choices.
  • Visit Carnide: This quieter neighborhood boasts fantastic local eateries such as Paço de Carnide and Adega das Gravatas.
  • Experience live fado: Enjoy the soulful music and great food at Tasca Bela in Alfama.
