Discover the Wonders of Colombia’s National Parks
From the beauty of the beaches of Parque Nacional Natural Tayrona to the peaks of Parque Nacional Natural Los Nevados, Colombia’s 59 protected natural areas are a must for nature lovers. Alongside protecting some of the most biologically diverse ecosystems in the world, many of these areas are also inhabited by indigenous and Afro-Colombian communities.
Ocean Malandra demonstrates how to visit two different parks over four days in Colombia. In this itinerary, we will explore the stunning landscapes and cultures that define this incredible country.
Why You Should Visit Colombia’s Parques Nacionales Naturales (PNN)
Colombia is renowned for its natural splendor, boasting Caribbean beaches, high Andean peaks, the deep Amazon rainforest, arid coastal deserts, and more. It holds the record as the world’s most biodiverse country per square foot. Therefore, the 59 glorious parks that comprise the country’s National Natural Park System (PNN) provide unparalleled outdoor-travel experiences. This four-day itinerary showcases two highlights: Parque Nacional Natural Tayrona and the Valle de Cocora, each offering unique ecosystems and cultural experiences.
Explore the Rugged Caribbean Coast
Your journey begins in Santa Marta, a beautiful city nestled in a picturesque bay adjacent to Parque Nacional Natural Tayrona. This rugged Caribbean wilderness features spectacular mountainous terrain, with jungle-covered mountains descending dramatically to turquoise seas. The park’s unique topography results in rugged features and secluded cove beaches, offering breathtaking vistas unlike any other part of the Caribbean shoreline in Latin America.
Start your day in Santa Marta with breakfast at Ikaro, located on a charming pedestrian-only street. Enjoy an organic coffee made from nearby beans, alongside an omelet and an energizing açaí bowl in a jungle-like setting. Following breakfast, stroll through Parque de Los Novios and the Santa Marta malecón for breathtaking views over the harbor.
Catching a taxi to the Santa Marta market can help you stock up on fresh fruit and snacks. Buses to Tayrona depart from a small terminal behind the market every half hour, dropping you off at El Zaino, the park’s main entrance. It’s wise to leave early to ensure you have ample time for your hike.
Upon arrival at El Zaino, you must pay an admission fee to enter the park. From here, hike to the coastline and the first camping sites at Canaveral. Visitors can find ecohabs inspired by the ancient Tayrona civilization, boasting stunning views of the Caribbean Sea. The hike along the coastal trail to sites such as Arrecifes and Cabo San Juan is highly recommended, showcasing a number of camping options, from cabanas to tents for rental.
The two-hour hike between Canaveral and Cabo San Juan traverses thick tropical rainforest, providing chances to spot exotic wildlife such as tamarin monkeys and green iguanas. At Cabo San Juan, options include tent or hammock rentals, with a delightful onsite restaurant offering fresh local seafood.
Swim, Hike, and Explore a Hidden City
Start the day with a refreshing swim in the Caribbean Sea before enjoying breakfast at the onsite restaurant or from your packed provisions. Adventurous spirits may head to Playa Cristal for calm waters perfect for wading and snorkeling or explore the wilderness beach of Playa Brava.
Another thrilling option is to embark on a two-hour hike to El Pueblito, an archaeological site of a former bustling Tayrona village, where wildlife sightings are common. Further adventures can take you to the larger “Lost City,” often referred to as the Machu Picchu of Colombia, revealing terraced stone settlements and breathtaking jungle views.
It’s Coffee Time in Armenia
Your next destination is Armenia, the coffee capital of Quindío department, known for its premium coffee cultivation. Begin your journey with a visit to Quindío Botanical Garden, featuring a renowned butterfly sanctuary. Following your exploration in Armenia, take a bus ride to Salento, one of the most picturesque towns in Colombia.
Spend the afternoon soaking up the charm of Salento, with a leisurely walk to a mirador (lookout) for panoramic views of the town and surrounding landscapes. Don’t miss the opportunity to visit a local coffee grower for a guided tour and exploration of the stunning region.
At night, join locals in the main plaza for live music and traditional Colombian dishes, ensuring you experience local flavors with fresh lake trout and delicious arepas con queso.
Set Out on One of Colombia’s Most Epic Loop Hikes
On your final adventure, embark on the spectacular loop hike through Valle de Cocora, home to towering Quindío wax palms, the tallest palm trees in the world. This five to six-hour adventure offers breathtaking scenery as you walk through lush, tropical mountain valley landscapes.
The hike begins with a relatively flat section through the valley, which transitions into a challenging climb through the cloud forest. Keep an eye out for various wildlife species along the way. After reaching Finca la Montaña, savor a refreshing lunch while taking in unbelievable views before heading back through the magnificent wax palm forests.
As you conclude your adventure through Colombia’s extraordinary national parks, the memories of breathtaking landscapes, rich culture, and unforgettable experiences will inspire your future journeys.
