Optimal Times to Visit Tulum for an Unforgettable Experience

Tulum evokes images of sun-soaked white-sand beaches, chic eco-bungalows, and gleaming Mayan ruins. It’s also the perfect base for exploring the vast biosphere reserves to experience the underground worlds of cenotes, or catch breathtaking performances such as the Voladores (flying men).

It’s no wonder travelers flock to this corner of Mexico year-round. However, Tulum’s popularity has made it one of the priciest destinations in Mexico – especially during the high season when the weather is reliably perfect. Fortunately, visitors can still find deals during the off-season. You may encounter some rain, but somehow the sun seems to always shine through.

High Season (December to April) – Warm, Sunny, and Beautiful

Warm, sunny days and cool nights entice travelers to Tulum for beach time, yoga retreats, and multi-day music festivals. This high season is characterized by temperate weather, which makes it optimal for sightseeing. Occasional nortes (storms bringing northerly winds) attract kiteboarders to the otherwise tranquil waters. Expect to see crowds and increased hotel rates around Christmas and spring break.

Shoulder Season (July to August) – The Best Time for Nightlife

Though it’s hot and humid, it’s the heart of summer vacation, with both locals and international travelers flocking to Tulum. You’ll probably experience brief rain showers, but they’re typically short-lived. Balmy nights bring moonlit beach parties and downtown bar hopping. Hotel rates rise, making Tulum bustling again.

Budget Travelers Should Visit in Low Season (May, June, September to November)

These months represent the low season for Tulum. The heat and rain thin out the crowds, making it a peaceful time for exploration. If you’re an ocean diver or snorkeler, stormy weather may affect visibility. Nonetheless, you can still explore the region and cool off in cenotes regardless of the weather. Expect deals on hotels, although some do close. In the fall, checking the weather forecast is advisable, especially for hurricane warnings. November can bring beautiful weather and lower prices.

January Can Be Very Busy

The first week of January is among the busiest times of the year with partying, music events, and the last of the Christmas festivities. Expect warm days, cool nights, and heightened prices.

Carnaval Takes Over in February

Gorgeous weather continues, but Tulum quiets down, except during Carnaval, when parades, over-the-top costumes, and live music fill the streets.

June marks the beginning of hurricane season. Expect sunny days with short showers and low tourist numbers.
