Discover the Scottish Highlands and Historic Castle Tioram

Slow Adventures in the Scottish Highlands

After our extensive drive through one of the most picturesque routes in the Scottish Highlands, we resolved to adjust our pace and embrace a more leisurely approach (in truth, this decision was made well before we set foot in Scotland).

Visit to the Isle of Skye

The day commenced with a brief drive over the bridge to the Isle of Skye, which I must confess was my greatest regret during this journey.

The Isle of Skye is truly magnificent, and while I aspired to witness much more of the Highlands beyond the typical attractions (there is far more to discover in the Highlands), I certainly would have cherished additional time to explore the island’s rugged beauty; even if it was just a few more hours driving around the area. (This reason alone could justify a return visit very soon… 😉 )

Exploring Armadale Castle

We ultimately spent only a few hours here, having traveled to catch a ferry. With limited time available, we proceeded to Armadale Castle – the historical residence of the MacDonald clan.

Although very little of the castle remains aside from its notable façade, a visit is absolutely worthwhile. Additionally, its proximity to the ferry terminal provides a compelling reason for exploration.

Foraging Adventure

A more insightful way to experience the area, as suggested by others later, would have been a scenic drive (approximately 20-25 minutes). This entails traveling to Toskavaig bay between Tarskavaig and Ord, then embarking on a walk to Dunscaith Castle. This castle, dating back to the 1300s, is widely believed to be the oldest standing structure on the Isle of Skye, though not much of it remains intact. Originally constructed for the MacAskills clan, it was transferred early in its history to the MacLeods clan.

We were fortunate enough to forage for sustainable food by the seaside in Arisaig (which we reached from Mallaig) and prepared a meal from our findings.

Camusdarach Beach Experience

Post-foraging, we made our way to a hidden treasure known as Camusdarach Beach; renowned for its long stretches of fine white sand intertwining with cool blue waters. Access to this beach requires navigating several meters of long grass and narrow footpaths, making it feel like a concealed gem.

Castle Tioram Visit

The castle we ultimately visited was Castle Tioram, recognized as being arguably as impressive as Eilean Donan Castle, though it appears more dilapidated. Located on the shores of the Loch, the enchanting sunset coupled with reflection on the water creates an unforgettable scene.

Conclusion

Eventually, we bid farewell to Castle Tioram as our appetites called for sustenance (the fresh Highland air truly awakens one’s hunger!).

At the Loch Shield hotel, we savored a quintessential Scottish night with fish and chips for dinner paired with a Scottish beef burger, and concluded with a delightful sticky toffee pudding and sundae.
