Summary
- Introduction to Upper Austria and the unexpected beauty of Mühlviertler Alm.
- The experience at Wanderreithof Heimelsteiner, a beloved farmhouse stay.
- Exploring local culture and hospitality through an evening horse carriage ride.
Arriving in Mühlviertler Alm, after departing the remarkable Melk Abbey, was a revelation—largely because it deviated significantly from my preconceived notions of Austria.
The picturesque rolling hills create astounding silhouettes against one another during sunset.
Regrettably, I had limited time to pause for photographs, which would have resulted in a much later check-in at our accommodation—Wanderreithof Heimelsteiner.
Wanderreithof Heimelsteiner is a rustic farmhouse in Mühlviertler Alm, and I must disclose that it has remained one of my most memorable experiences in Austria to date.
The defining aspect of this experience was undoubtedly the warmth of the locals, who welcomed us with evening drinks and engaging conversations upon our late arrival at the farmhouse. Their hospitality made us feel instantly at ease.
We had no designated plans for that evening beyond a horse and carriage excursion through the hills. Following a quick beer, we boarded the carriage amidst enthusiastic locals, eager to showcase the beauty of Mühlviertler Alm.
This excursion allowed us to visit several neighboring homes—some of whom we had just met, yet they were eager to share their charming part of Austria with us, including their home-brewed 15-year-old schnapps and other beverages. *Moreover: The schnapps tasting occurred at Plaimer’s.
Moreover, it is important to note that spontaneous gatherings of this nature are not uncommon within this region of Austria. As someone from London, where it can feel as though one rarely gets acquainted with their neighbors, this cultural shift is both refreshing and heartwarming.
Therefore, this chapter in Mühlviertler Alm has not only enriched my travels but also left an enduring impression of genuine hospitality, stunning landscapes, and unforgettable connections.
After such a lively evening, our early morning horse ride through the scenic countryside was an invigorating departure from the bustling life of urban centers.
Regrettably, I did not have my camera during this ride, and in hindsight, I sincerely wish I had as the breathtaking views of wooded areas, mountain peaks, and valleys we traversed were extraordinary! This unique experience truly exemplified the beauty of Austria’s natural landscape.
Ultimately, this excursion through the expansive Austrian countryside presented a remarkable approach to appreciate the tranquil beauty of the region, a recommendation I emphatically endorse!
With that, it was time to bid farewell to Upper Austria and head back to Vienna in preparation for our flight back to London.
Despite having ventured through three distinct regions of Austria, I departed longing to explore even more of this magnificent country—be it skiing in the Alps during winter or indulging in the alluring natural landscapes in summer, Austria unequivocally captivates every visitor!
