Oistins Fish Fry has increasingly become a cornerstone of Barbados, particularly noteworthy on Friday evenings. Prior to my arrival in the Caribbean, I was largely unfamiliar with Oistins. However, once I set foot on Bajan soil, I encountered discussions about it at every turn… and for excellent reasons!

Following an exhilarating yet exhausting day of swimming with turtles and soaking up the sun on a secluded beach, I decided to heed everyone’s recommendations and proceeded directly to Oistins Fishing Town located on the southern coast of Barbados. Undoubtedly, I was in for an exceptional culinary experience!

Oistins Is Comparable to Borough Market After a Glass of Pinot Grigio!

Oistins Fish Fry has established itself as an irreplaceable part of the Barbadian experience, especially on Friday evenings. Envision it as Borough Market but with an abundance of lively exuberance akin to that of Camden Market and Notting Hill Carnival combined.

Upon leaving the beach and with twilight approaching, I felt an eager anticipation to immerse myself in the ambiance of Oistins. A quick 30-minute taxi ride had me ready to partake in the festivities of Friday night.

Upon my arrival, I immediately grasped the source of the excitement. Thousands of locals and visitors congregated at the beach, all in pursuit of the most delectable meal of the night.

What Exactly Does Dolphin Entail?!?

Upon my arrival, I felt an overpowering hunger, prompting my immediate search for something appealing to eat among the approximately 80 food stalls. You were truly spoiled for choice, as the offerings ranged from swordfish, jerk chicken, flying fish, and even ‘dolphin.’ My initial shock and dismay upon seeing dolphin on the menu led to a moment of concern about how individuals could consume dolphin… how?!? Driven by curiosity, I sought to learn more about the dish labeled ‘dolphin.’ Thankfully, I was reassured that although Bajan’s refer to the dish as ‘dolphin,’ it is actually mahi-mahi, and the term dolphin has become somewhat of a colloquial expression for it. A sigh of relief! 🙂

My initial concerns regarding dolphin quickly subsided, allowing my craving for seafood to resurface. Subsequently, I opted for a dish that I was informed is a local Bajan classic – Jerk Chicken! Seated at communal tables, I enthusiastically enjoyed my chicken and macaroni pie as soon as it was served. I can only imagine the extent of the sauce decorating my face after voraciously consuming that chicken. I dared not look in a mirror due to the potential embarrassment… particularly after experiencing a few tell-tale dribbles down my white shirt. However, impulsively indulging in the mouth-watering food left me blissfully happy! 😉

Exploring Oistins

Following my hearty meal, I felt the necessity to burn off some of those extra calories. I proceeded to an area where locals assembled to engage in games of dominoes and cards. The surroundings were charged with energy as each game attracted intense focus; cheers erupted, and gatherings formed around crucial matches. While I desired to join the games, my unfamiliarity with dominoes led me to discreetly move along… best not to embarrass myself further.

After a little more exploration and a brief look around the local artisan stalls, I proceeded to the main stage, where I enjoyed captivating performances by local dancers, singers, and drummers entertaining the assembly of spectators. I stumbled upon some exceptional break dancers—far superior to my own modest attempts! Fortunately, no one had to endure my dancing on a stage; I typically save those unique moves for my friends back at home, and even then, only after they, and I, are suitably refreshed with a few drinks first. 😉

Before I knew it, my phone’s alarm signaled that it was time to depart. How I could have lingered here indefinitely! The combination of music, rum punches, and scrumptious food made it an unforgettable evening.
