Summary of Unique Experiences in Cape Town
After recently exploring Cape Town, where we encountered adorable penguins in Boulders Bay, admired the scenic coastline of Cape Peninsula, and savored meals at some of Cape Town’s finest establishments, we knew a return visit was inevitable to one of the most captivating regions we have yet to experience!
As we planned our next journey, we sought guidance from Annika, a trusted local expert from Midnight Blue Elephant Blog. Consider her unique recommendations, which we aim to experience on our upcoming visit!
1.) Paraglide from Signal Hill
Paragliding has long been an aspiration of mine, and Cape Town offers an ideal venue for this adventure. Launching from Signal Hill, you glide around Lion’s Head, over the Atlantic Seaboard, and above the ocean, all while enjoying breathtaking views and an exhilarating rush. The booking link is available here.
2.) Peruse the galleries during First Thursdays
Do you enjoy pub crawls? Consider the artistic equivalent via a gallery crawl! First Thursdays has rapidly become a local tradition as galleries in the City Bowl remain open later on the first Thursday of each month. Roam between venues, discover new African talents, and relax with a glass of wine—after all, this is Cape Town!
3.) Experience a secret South African Sunrise
What could be more delightful than an incredible sunrise? Perhaps a secret sunrise—a charming sunrise dance party that promises immense fun! Get on the newsletter for location clues, don your headphones, and dance your way into the dawn.
4.) Make friends while dining
If you seek local dining experiences, I recommend Reverie Social Table in Observatory. This innovative restaurant centers around a communal dining table that encourages social interaction. While sharing plates is not mandatory, conversing with your neighbor is highly encouraged, and involvement on your mobile device is discouraged.
5.) Give back with Greenpop
Are you interested in contributing positively during your travels? Consider contacting Greenpop, a dedicated organization committed to reforesting Sub-Saharan Africa. Participate in tree-planting days to rejuvenate the environment.
6.) Take a bath
The beaches of Cape Town are renowned for their stunning beauty. However, I recommend visiting Kraal Baai at the West Coast National Park for an exceptional experience. Here, you will find azure waters warmed by the sun, making it perfect for a delightful bathing experience. The drive there is equally picturesque, presenting the possibility of spotting sea turtles along the way.
7.) Celebrate heritage
If there were a national pastime embraced by all in South Africa, it would undoubtedly be the braai (barbecue). Heritage Day, commonly referred to as Braai Day, is the time to indulge in this tradition. For the best cuts, explore Frankie Fenner Meat Merchants and locate one of many scenic public braai spots (my recommendation is Oude Kraal Beach) where you can enjoy quality grilled meats in a stunning setting.
8.) Music with a view
Capetonians have a deep appreciation for music and nature, leading to a blend of both. Throughout the summer months, concerts occur every Sunday evening against the breathtaking backdrop of Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens. Local bands, the Philharmonic, and international acts perform in an enchanting atmosphere where you can relax and dance on a picnic blanket.
9.) Eat Local at a food market
Food markets are a beloved pastime among both locals and visitors. The renowned Neighbourgoods Market at the Old Biscuit Mill buzzes every Saturday. If you miss it, consider the V&A Waterfront Food Market, which is open daily and offers an array of local cuisine and flavors.
10.) Seal spot off the South African coast
South Africa is recognized for its diverse marine life, featuring not only sharks but also Cape Seals. Embarking on a snorkeling or diving trip to various seal colonies is an unforgettable experience, as seals are inquisitive and friendly without needing to be fed. Capture their attention with a clap and a playful bark!
