Culinary Delights in the Faroe Islands
Exploring the Faroe Islands is laborious, and after a busy day on the islands, thoughts naturally transition to dining. 🍜
Fortunately, Tórshavn, the vibrant capital of the islands, offers a plethora of dining options featuring divine Faroese cuisine. The decision was straightforward, and we opted for a meal at Barbara, renowned for its exquisite Faroese dishes.
Barbara is conveniently located at the heart of the city, adjacent to the harbor, making it easily accessible via a quaint cobblestone street.
The restaurant presents an extensive selection, prompting us to choose the tasting menu as a convenient way to sample various dishes we might otherwise overlook.
The ambiance at Barbara is comfortably Faroese, with cozy interiors that offer a warm refuge from the cold exterior, enhanced by efficient heating.
Beginning our meal with a selection of wines and cocktails, we transitioned to a refreshing salad starter.
Following the salad, we were presented with massive mussels, the largest I had ever encountered, which were supremely satisfying.
Subsequently, we explored an array of seafood options, essential given the island’s maritime heritage.
We started with monkfish, followed by perch, which was both scrumptious and visually unique.
The most notable fish dish was the Bacalao, a traditional dried and salted cod, which is a Nordic favorite. This preservation method enhances the flavor remarkably.
To conclude the main course, we savored Barbara’s renowned fish soup, a wonderful combination of freshly chopped vegetables, fish, croutons, and accompanied by a rich broth.
After such a fulfilling dining experience, I retired satisfied and eagerly anticipated exploring the island further the next day.
The following morning, we rose early to uncover a different aspect of the island, this time on horseback.
We took time to bond with our horses, engaging in an adventurous ride through the mountains, where we eventually embraced full gallop.
As we concluded our horse riding session, a playful victory dance ensued back at the stables, showcasing the delightful nature of these Icelandic horses rather than Faroese horses, which tend to be more independent.
This culinary adventure paired with the exhilarating experience of horse riding in the serene landscapes undoubtedly exemplified the best of the Faroe Islands.
We bid farewell to the horses and set off in search of our next meal!
