Captivating Night Photography: Top Cities to Explore After Dark

Enchanting Nightlife Experiences in World-Class Cities

There’s something magical about world-class cities after dark, where the night unveils a different array of feelings and experiences that daytime simply cannot offer. GoTravelDaily reached out to travel writers living in iconic cities like Los Angeles, Bangkok, Delhi, Paris, and London. They shared their favorite spots to experience these destinations after sunset, providing some captivating insights.

Los Angeles, by Danielle Dorsey

Los Angeles, home to Tinseltown, Beverly Hills, and artistic enclaves like Silver Lake and Highland Park, offers a wealth of culture and diverse activities to explore after dark. When I’m seeking a relaxed evening, I love stargazing at Griffith Park Observatory or enjoying the iconic Ferris wheel at the Santa Monica Pier. For those looking to sip cocktails while taking in the skyline, numerous rooftop bars await, such as Perch’s 14th floor bar in Downtown LA or Yamashiro’s historic pagoda in Hollywood Hills.

New establishments are also popping up around Hollywood’s Vinyl District, such as Bar Lis, a Mediterranean-inspired terrace boasting DJs and dancing, and Desert 5 Spot, an engaging venue featuring country-rock cover bands in a vibrant setting. A trip to the Sunset Strip offers star-studded experiences at places like Saddle Ranch Chop House and Sunset at Edition, known for their dazzling interiors. Finally, I indulge in the city’s mezcal trend by visiting agave-centric bars like Madre, Gracias Madre, Guelaguetza, Las Perlas, and Bar Calo.

As the vibrant life of Bangkok settles after daylight, the city exudes a magical atmosphere. Once the last tourist groups leave Wat Pho, I enjoy a serene stroll through the mostly deserted temple grounds. A short walk leads to Wat Arun, beautifully illuminated along the Chao Phraya River. My favorite evening spot is Yaowarat, the bustling main road of Chinatown.

After sunset, Yaowarat transforms into a bright street food paradise, adorned with neon signs, cooking flames, and lanterns. After enjoying a meal from a roadside vendor, I wander through narrow alleyways leading to hidden temples like Wat Sam Pluem, local bars, or the lively Pak Klong Talad flower market.

Delhi, by Punita Malhotra

Described by an American guest as “New York on steroids,” Delhi’s frantic lifestyle slows down after rush hour. I relish driving through the peaceful lanes of Lutyen’s Delhi, admiring the illuminated Rashtrapati Bhavan (Presidential Secretariat). The culinary adventures come alive with street food and sizzling kebabs in the bustling bazaars of Chandni Chowk.

I also love escaping to the lush Sunder Nursery, a UNESCO Heritage site with Mughal-era monuments and serene gardens. On full moon nights, I find my way to the stunning Humayun’s Tomb for a glimpse of its enchanting beauty, and my evenings often conclude in Khan Market, a favorite haunt filled with stylish bars and restaurants serving a variety of international cuisines.

Paris, by Catherine Le Nevez

In Paris, floodlit monuments shimmering on rain-soaked cobblestones and the Seine create a mesmerizing atmosphere. I enjoy strolling along the river, where floating clubs and terraces such as Scilicet offer delightful refreshments and music, all while enjoying beautiful views of the Conciergerie and the Eiffel Tower.

The vintage street lamps cast a warm, inviting glow over neighborhoods like the Latin Quarter, Le Marais, and Montmartre. These areas are perfect for discovering new restaurants, cocktail bars, and live music venues, particularly for jazz enthusiasts. Rooftop bars such as Le Perchoir and Point Éphémère are ideal spots to unwind after dark in “la Ville Lumière.”

London, by Daniel Fahey

London’s nightlife is a tapestry of experiences, from vibrant queer poetry performances and absurdist comedy to all-night cooking and cinematic events. I cherish moments sipping cocktails at the Shard, watching timeless plays at Shakespeare’s Globe, or enjoying delicious desserts at NOPI.

Visiting the National Gallery, open until 9 pm on Fridays, is a fantastic way to experience the masterpieces of European art. I also luxuriously indulge at London’s atmospheric drinking establishments, such as Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese, which transports visitors to a different era, offering a unique atmosphere and historical charm.

By exploring these enchanting nighttime experiences in cities around the world, you can encounter extraordinary places and create lasting memories. From Los Angeles to Paris and beyond, each city offers its own allure and charm that can only be truly appreciated after dark.
