Situated just off the coast of mainland Greece, Kefalonia (or Cephalonia) is recognized as one of the premier Greek islands within the Ionian Sea. This stunning isle is rich with natural beauty and abundant history, leaving visitors with numerous options for exploration.
Following our recent visit to the island, I felt compelled to share some of the top experiences we encountered. Unlike certain more well-known Greek Islands such as Santorini, Mykonos, Crete, and Corfu, Kefalonia offers a more tranquil setting that is definitely worth exploring.
Below, I am pleased to present a list of the most remarkable activities to engage in during your upcoming journey to Kefalonia. Whether you are drawn to its beautiful coastlines or historical villages, I trust you will find activities that resonate with your interests.
1.) Melissani Lake
Melissani Lake is undoubtedly one of the most extraordinary experiences on the island, even if only for a brief visit. This stunning underground lake was concealed for many years, and eventually, the ceiling collapsed, leading to breathtaking views.
Located within a short drive from the town of Sami, Melissani Lake is easily accessible from anywhere on the island. Be sure to obtain a ticket for entry, or arrange a private tour of the lake, which also encompasses Antisamos Beach.
Once inside, you will be welcomed by a boat ride across the clear waters of the lake, providing an unforgettable visual experience. Although the visit may last only 10 to 15 minutes, it is absolutely worth the effort to witness this natural wonder.
2.) Myrtos Beach
Myrtos Beach is acclaimed for its stunning waters that are among the most vibrant that you will ever encounter, even rivaling those found in the Maldives. If you treasure beach days, this beach should not be overlooked.
Upon arriving, take a moment to admire the view from the lookout points along the road, and then make your way down to the beach.
Comfortable footwear is advisable as the beach features pebbles.
3.) Asos (Assos)
Asos, often referred to as Assos, is one of the most picturesque villages on the island. Conveniently, it is only a 15-minute drive from Myrtos Beach, making it ideal to combine visits.
While in Asos, stroll through its charming streets, admire the colorful architecture, and enjoy a refreshing frappe at one of the coastal cafes. Alternatively, consider taking a leisurely hike to the top of the peninsula, which provides stunning panoramic views of the area.
4.) Fiskardo
Nestled along the northern coast of Kefalonia, Fiskardo is a quaint fishing village with a history dating back to Roman times. The picturesque harbor is lined with local restaurants that offer delectable cuisine that you won’t want to miss.
Take time to explore the town itself and browse the local shops for unique finds.
5.) Ithaca
A visit to the nearby island of Ithaca is easily feasible for a day trip from Kefalonia. Most boats depart from Sami, though you may find charters from other locations on the island.
While on Ithaca, enjoy a leisurely stroll around the harbor, explore its coastline, and simply relax. It’s a wonderful destination for a laid-back day out.
6.) Sami
Located on the eastern coast of Kefalonia, Sami represents one of the larger towns on the island. While small, it is a destination that should not be overlooked.
As you explore, take a walk along the historic port filled with delightful cafes and enjoy a meal at one of the local eateries. Additionally, visiting the Sami Acropolis or Melissani Lake is highly recommended. It’s a great stop for lunch.
7.) Drogarati Caves
Close to Melissani Lake, the Drogarati Caves can be visited conveniently after (or before) your exploration of the lake. If you’re fascinated by geological formations, this will be an ideal activity to include on your itinerary. Moreover, escaping the summer heat within the cave is a welcome relief.
Within the caves, you can admire impressive stalactites and stalagmites in the expansive cavern.
8.) Argostoli
Argostoli is the largest town on the island, located approximately a 20-minute drive from the airport. This charming area offers ample opportunity for delightful dining experiences and leisurely walks along the harbor.
A local dining establishment we particularly enjoyed was Tzivras Restaurant 1933, positioned just off the main harbor. It is a genuine gem that caters mainly to locals and offers incredible food.
Be sure to glance out into the harbor; it is not uncommon to spot turtles swimming in the area. Additionally, if you wish to stay in Argostoli, consider the elegant Kefalonia Grand.
9.) Petani Beach
On the west coast lies Petani Beach, another beautiful destination you should certainly include in your itinerary. If your accommodations are in the Lixouri area, the beach can be reached within approximately 25 minutes by car.
For a more scenic route, consider taking the car ferry from Argostoli to Lixouri instead of navigating around the bay. If you are a beach enthusiast, Petani Beach will undoubtedly be a highlight of your visit, so do remember to bring sunscreen!
10.) Fteri Beach
Situated between Petani Beach and Myrtos Beach, Fteri Beach presents another idyllic spot for a tranquil afternoon. Renowned for its azure waters and stunning surroundings, it is the perfect setting for a refreshing swim.
