Explore Esslingen: A Medieval Gem & Festive Christmas Market

After a delightful day exploring the vibrant city of Tubingen, we decided to travel to Esslingen to visit one of the most recommended Christmas markets in the region.

Esslingen is simply a city located within the Stuttgart area (though the term “confusing” applies due to its city-within-a-city structure). In reality, reaching it is straightforward, requiring only a 20-minute direct train ride from the city center.

A brief stroll from the train station leads you to the stunning Basilica, which draws you in (we took a moment to step inside)…

…and this is also where you will find the lively market square.

We eagerly began our culinary adventure, indulging in piping hot gluhwein to warm ourselves while simultaneously savoring bratwurst at an impressive pace.

The allure of Esslingen extends beyond its charming timber-framed houses and delightful Christmas market. What truly sets it apart is its medieval Christmas market.

Although it bears the characteristics of a traditional Christmas market (including steaming gluhwein), visiting this one feels as though you have been transported back in time.

The vendors don authentic period costumes, and the items available for purchase (with the exception of food) are markedly distinctive.

This unique market is conveniently located next to another impressive one, providing ample justification for attendance, regardless of your preference for candlelit stalls over electric illumination. 😀

We spent the next couple of hours exploring stall after stall, pausing to refill our gluhwein once it became evident that our mugs were depleting, while also engaging in various games at the stands.

Our enthusiasm for the market caused us to lose track of time, resulting in us being late for dinner! (Once again!)

Dinner that evening was at Gasthaus Bären, which offered a splendid array of German and international cuisine.

Upon entering, we were warmly welcomed with complimentary glasses of wine while we awaited our table (which was an encouraging start).

Enticed to our table, we promptly ordered beers to begin…

…swiftly followed by meatballs, maultaschen (which we had previously prepared here) and dumplings.

Lloyd opted for goulash, while we chose spätzle, salmon, and spicy potatoes to share.

We feasted so heartily that contemplating dessert became quite the challenge, ultimately transitioning to winter cocktails instead.

With that, it was time to retire for the night!

This entire day underscored the significance of exploring beyond the city center; both Tubingen and Esslingen proved to be hidden treasures, motivating us to delve further into Stuttgart and its surroundings.
