Ultimate Guide to Visiting Lagos: Festivals, Fashion & Fun

Best Times to Visit Lagos, Nigeria: A Seasonal Guide

Lagos is Nigeria’s hub of business, entertainment, fashion, and everything in between. Knowing the optimal times to experience this thrilling city can significantly enhance any visit.

Lagos experiences two main seasons: the rainy season (April through mid-November) and the dry season (November to March). The ideal time to enjoy Lagos is from November to February, characterized by drier weather, reduced humidity, and cooler temperatures due to the harmattan winds.

June and July are the wettest months, often bringing heavy downpours that may cause flash floods and severe traffic congestion. Despite this, even during the low season, there are countless activities to engage in within the “Center of Excellence,” often at lower prices compared to peak times.

High Season: December–February

Best time for great weather, concerts, and vibrant nightlife

The pleasant, dry conditions particularly in December make this the prime season for visiting Lagos. The city sees a surge in visitors returning to celebrate holidays with family and friends, which can result in higher prices. However, the allure lies in the stunning sunny beach days, festive dining, concerts, stage plays, and unforgettable parties known as “Detty December.”

Come late December and early January, a post-holiday lull offers an excellent chance to explore the city amid fewer crowds and less traffic.

Shoulder Season: August, October–November

Best time for budget travelers

In August, Lagos experiences a brief respite from the heavy rains. Although it rains again from mid-August through November, conditions are much milder than during the low season. Schools also close for summer holidays, alleviating congestion in the city. The festive season begins in November, which includes numerous events and festivals.

Low Season: March–July, September

Best time for deals and indoor activities

The March to July and September period is characterized by hot, humid, and rainy weather, making it the least favorable time to visit. Nevertheless, Lagos remains vibrant; visitors can still enjoy numerous attractions, including popular bars, restaurants, art galleries, and the lively nightlife scene. Additionally, lower prices often complement outings in the rainy season.

January

January is an excellent time to experience Lagos as holiday traffic subsides, and the city resumes its everyday pace. Remarkably favorable weather persists, making it one of the best months to visit.
