When one envisions a European capital, thoughts might often drift to prominent cities such as London, Paris, Berlin, or Rome ✈️.
We tend to overlook charming capitals that deserve our attention, especially when planning a visit to Tórshavn.

Tórshavn is situated close to continental Europe, yet it can often seem worlds apart. With a population of approximately 17,000, it ranks among the smallest capital cities in Europe, surpassed only by a few unique micro-states worth exploring.

Tórshavn is characteristically hidden yet accessible; positioned atop a remote group of islands within the Norwegian Sea and North Atlantic Ocean, nestled between Iceland and the Scottish Highlands.
Located on the southeast coast of the Faroe Islands, Tórshavn had long been on my travel checklist. Given its relatively straightforward accessibility from major cities like London (approximately a couple of hours, and only an hour from Edinburgh), I have no excuse for postponing my visit for so long.
Fortunately, I have recently explored this charming destination, uncovering engaging activities to do in Tórshavn.
What to do in Torshavn: What’s unique?
Tórshavn is indeed a modest capital city, with its population being smaller than some boroughs in London. Approximately 17,000 residents call Tórshavn home, contributing to its quaint charm, particularly in the historic district, which is abundant in fascinating buildings.
This area, known as Tinganes, holds historical significance as it houses the Faroese Government, rendering it one of the oldest parliamentary meeting places globally. In fact, there are only two other locations that share similar recognition, one on the Isle of Man, UK, and the other in Iceland.
Characterized by grassy roofs and cobblestone pathways, the entire area evokes a sense of stepping back into the Viking era that once reigned over these picturesque islands. One delightful aspect that quickly caught my attention was the traditional grass roofs adorning several buildings, serving both a practical and aesthetic purpose, adding to the appeal of Tórshavn.

During our stay in Tórshavn, we opted for Hotel Føroyar, perched atop a hill overlooking the city. This vantage point provides breathtaking views, particularly during the extended daylight hours of the summer months. We even encountered some of the local sheep leisurely wandering past our hotel. 😉

For a relatively small city, Tórshavn boasts a remarkable culinary scene. One should certainly visit Barbara, the oldest restaurant in the country, which continues to serve exquisite traditional Faroese cuisine.
If you are in search of a dining experience with a modern twist, I highly recommend Etika, known for being the world’s first Faroese sushi bar.
What to do in Torshavn: What’s the weather like?
While I won’t delve into excessive scientific details, I quickly learned that the Faroe Islands, including Tórshavn, are characterized by a sub-polar climate. This implies it can become quite chilly, especially during the prolonged winter season.
Although snowfall is generally minimal due to the nearby sea, strong winds can lash against the island due to its exposed geographical position.
Temperatures can vary from below freezing to the mid-teens during warmer days. I visited in May when temperatures hovered around freezing, only rising to 8°C to 10°C by early afternoon. It is essential to pack a warm jacket, plenty of layers, and a reliable raincoat to prepare for the fluctuating weather often described as “more unpredictable than a toddler having a tantrum.” 😉

Tórshavn is relatively compact, with its historic center covering less than one square mile. This compact size is advantageous for travelers with limited time who wish to maximize their experiences; the city can indeed be thoroughly explored within just a few hours.
What to do in Torshavn: Are there sights to explore near the city?
One exceptional aspect of Tórshavn is that driving for less than ten minutes transports you to pristine wilderness. The entire country is filled with incredible locales that are easily accessible by car. Here are a few remarkable sites to visit within an hour’s drive:
1.) Vestmanna – Explore the stunning cliffs and diverse wildlife, reminiscent of scenes from a Jurassic Park movie.
2.) Sørvágsvatn Lake – A breathtaking lake that appears to balance above towering cliffs.
3.) Gasadalur Waterfall – A magnificent waterfall cascading into the ocean from lofty cliffs.
