Summary
Iceland is a captivating country to visit, particularly for those seeking a unique and adventurous experience distinct from typical beach getaways. It is considerably larger than anticipated, which is why we are excited to present our comprehensive 1-week itinerary that will guide your exploration of this stunning island.
The island boasts a plethora of dramatic natural sites and top activities that are widely distributed across its landscape.
Moreover, Iceland offers an extensive array of delectable dishes and exceptional dining establishments that are essential to experience. Be sure to embark on one of the most remarkable hikes in Iceland as well. You will be wonderfully overwhelmed by the choices available to you.
Truly, the landscapes here evoke a sense of otherworldliness. It is both dramatic and breathtaking, compounded by the warmth and hospitality of the locals.
DAY 1
1.) Arrival in Iceland
A car rental is among the most efficient modes of transportation in Iceland. After securing your vehicle, proceed to the rental center and embrace the open road.
While it’s true that rental costs may be slightly elevated compared to other destinations, it remains a more economical option than signing up for multiple excursions, particularly for larger groups.
Importantly, many of Iceland’s most iconic attractions can be viewed without expense; all you need is a vehicle to reach them. We endorse this approach wholeheartedly; it is profoundly rewarding.
2.) Laugarvatn Fontana for Relaxation
This site features the fascinating practice of baking bread using underground geothermal energy, which is truly fascinating to witness.
Following lunch, relish a soak in the geothermal baths and explore the natural steam rooms available.
For those feeling adventurous, consider a plunge into the nearby frigid lake. You should experience this at least once; it will be quite refreshing.
Address: Laugarvatn Fontana, Hverabraut 1, 840 Laugarvatn, Iceland

3.) Witness Geysir (Including Strokkur) & Gulfoss Waterfall
These two locations, in conjunction with Thingvellir National Park, comprise a significant segment of the Golden Circle; the experience of witnessing the geyser’s eruption is genuinely remarkable. Accessing these sites by car is straightforward, as lengthy treks are unnecessary to enjoy them.
These sites are stunning throughout the entire year! Remember to wear robust hiking footwear as you will encounter numerous wet or muddy trails along the way.
4.) Discover Reykjavik
Our accommodations were at the Reykjavik Residence Hotel (we secured this placement shortly after confirming our flights). The hotel conveniently offers parking options and is located centrally, allowing ease of access throughout Reykjavik. Nevertheless, Reykjavik itself is a particularly pedestrian-friendly city.
While you are in the city, be sure to visit some of the finest dining options in Reykjavik, explore the iconic cathedral and capture panoramic views from its summit, and consider participating in a whale-watching tour.
5.) Drive Out of the City to Experience the Northern Lights
It is merely a 30-minute drive from downtown Reykjavik to reach untouched wilderness. This is the true appeal of Iceland; remarkable nature lies right outside your door.
Furthermore, Iceland is an excellent location for viewing the Northern Lights. While tours can be arranged from the city, we preferred to navigate ourselves into the national park and await their appearance. This approach allows you the flexibility to stay as long or as briefly as desired, in accordance with your preferences.
Prior to your venture, consider reviewing our Northern Lights photography tips.
DAY 2
1.) Whale Watching in Reykjavik
We opted for Special Tours, which provided an enjoyable afternoon of whale watching in Iceland. It serves as an excellent opportunity to observe native marine life and spend several hours exploring the open seas.
Although temperatures can be chilly, they will provide you with heavy bodysuits before you set sail. Enjoy your adventure!
Address: Special Tours, Reykjavik’s Old Harbour, 101 Reykjavik, Iceland

2.) Stay at the Frost & Fire Hotel
We had an incredible stay at this hotel, complete with a delightful dinner menu that is not to be missed.
After dinner, indulge in a cup of wine or beer, and relax in one of the geothermally heated hot tubs, where, with a bit of luck, you may also witness the Northern Lights.
Address: Hverhamar, 810 Hveragerði, Iceland
Website: www.frostandfire.is
3.) Again, Look for the Northern Lights
This is an activity that we undertook every evening, as one cannot always predict the cloud cover or the visibility of the lights.
Remember to dress warmly, bring your camera, and perhaps some hot tea for comfort.
DAY 3
1.) Walk Behind Seljalandsfoss
This activity is one of the easiest to incorporate into your 1-week itinerary while traveling east.
Moreover, this waterfall is the only one on this list where it is possible to walk behind the cascading water— a truly memorable experience that you should not miss.
2.) Visit Skogafoss
Located not far from Seljalandsfoss, Skogafoss is situated on the historic cliffs where the water once flowed into the ocean. Its grandeur is breath-taking.
To avoid the busiest hours, it is advisable to arrive in the early morning or late afternoon. If visiting during the summer months, the extended daylight hours allow for visits later in the evening as well.
3.) Experience a Glacier Hike
We initially intended to book a hike with the team from Atarcanum, but unfortunately, a storm prevented us from progressing with this plan during our visit.
They come highly recommended, and we look forward to the opportunity to experience the glacier hike on our next journey.
The glacier hike and ice climbing activity operates from Sólheimajökull glacier, located approximately 28 km west of Vík and 6 km east of Skógar. Just keep in mind, if you’re driving from Reykjavik, the distance is about 160 km, requiring roughly 2 hours of travel time.
4.) Explore Dyrhólaey and Vik Beach
The journey to the subsequent destination may be lengthy, making this stop a vital and memorable experience in Iceland.
The dramatic coastal scenery provided here is nothing short of astonishing.
5.) Relax at Hotel Laki
At Hotel Laki, dine in-house and enjoy a warm ambiance by the inviting fireplace after your meal.
Address: Efri-Vík, 880 Kirkjubæjarklaustur, Iceland
Website: www.hotellaki.is
6.) Experience the Northern Lights Again
We sought the Northern Lights every night, as the visibility can be uncertain based on cloud conditions.
Ensure you are warmly dressed with your camera and perhaps some hot tea to keep cozy.
DAY 4
1.) Glacier Cave Hike
Exploring a glacier cave in Vatnajökull is certainly a thrilling endeavor. However, other cave hikes in various parts of Iceland are also viable.
2.) Drive to Jökulsárlón
Jökulsárlón is a breathtaking location you must include in your itinerary when traveling in Iceland, serving as a perfect stopping point before you turn eastward again towards Reykjavik.
Boat tours are also available from the shore’s edge, providing a distinctive perspective of the floating icebergs.
3.) Revisit Geysir and Gullfoss or Hóf
If you missed either of these extraordinary sites previously or simply wish to experience them again, they are perfect to revisit if heading back west.
Alternatively, you can venture further west and stay in Höfn, as the surrounding landscape is nothing short of spectacular— especially around Stokksnes.
DAY 5
1.) Horseback Riding at Hestheimar
Icelandic horses are a unique treasure of the country; horses cannot be imported into Iceland, and exported horses are prohibited from returning. Quite remarkable!
The best way to appreciate the Icelandic countryside is while leisurely riding on these unique horses. We had the thrill of riding at Hestheimar during the tail end of a storm, adding a touch of excitement to the experience.
Address: Ásahreppur 851 Hella, Iceland
Website: www.hestheimar.is
2.) Relax at the Blue Lagoon
Our routine typically includes spending at least one night at the Blue Lagoon, which, while it may be pricier than many other Icelandic destinations, remains a cherished indulgence.
Guests enjoy the added luxury of their own private lagoon, which operates at different hours than the general facility, guaranteeing a serene experience.
Address: Blue Lagoon, 240 Grindavik, Iceland
3.) Experience the Northern Lights Again
Yes, once more! 😉
You can witness the lights from the comfort of your hotel balcony or even from the Blue Lagoon. We had the unique pleasure of floating in the lagoon while gazing at the ethereal lights above, creating a blissful experience and it is undoubtedly a highlight of our 1-week itinerary in Iceland.
DAY 6
1.) Delight in a Full Day at the Blue Lagoon
You deserve this relaxation, and few places provide greater opportunities than the Blue Lagoon. We luxuriated here all day and thoroughly relished the experience.
2.) Enjoy Dinner and Live Music in Reykjavik
Reykjavik boasts an intriguing music scene alongside vibrant live music venues worth exploring. A leisure stroll down the main street reveals the depth of this local culture.
After an evening filled with entertainment, do not miss the renowned Baejarins Beztu Pylsur (a hot dog stand) located by the harbor. This establishment has become a staple for both locals and travelers seeking a quick taste of Icelandic culinary culture!
DAY 7
1.) Explore Reykjavik
This is your opportunity to discover the city leisurely and continue from your previous adventures right before your departure from Keflavik Airport, which is approximately a 30-minute drive away.
Although your 1-week Icelandic itinerary may be concluding, consider future travels that may allow you a chance to traverse the full coastal road of Iceland.
