Austria is a magnificent country to explore, offering much more than its capital city, Vienna. While Vienna is undeniably wonderful, there exists a plethora of other stunning and picturesque destinations worthy of your attention. Consequently, I aim to highlight some of my favorite places in Austria that merit a visit during your next journey.
Located in the heart of Central Europe, Austria, despite its relatively small size, provides a rich variety of wonderful destinations for visitors. Therefore, do not let its size dissuade you; the country is dotted with numerous exceptional places to experience.
With so many available options, it can be challenging to determine priorities during your travels. This is why I have compiled a list of captivating locations that I hope you will find delightful.
1.) Vienna
It is impossible to discuss Austria’s best locations without mentioning the capital. Vienna enchants with its historic charm and vibrant atmosphere. Over the years, we have explored Vienna multiple times and appreciate its relaxed ambiance, historical significance, and modern attractions. After arriving, be sure to explore the Old Town, visit Schönbrunn Palace, and experience a performance at the State Opera House, which offers affordable tickets.
Continuing your exploration, make a stop at the Museum Quarter to immerse yourself in the city’s cultural treasures.
2.) Hallstatt
Hallstatt claims to be one of the oldest villages in Austria, and while its age may be debated, its beauty is indisputable. Adorned with charming alpine lodges and quaint streets, Hallstatt is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, preserved for generations.
Accessing Hallstatt may involve some planning, particularly since the train station is situated across the lake. Fortunately, visitors can enjoy a picturesque ferry ride to the town, which is perfect for a delightful day trip.
3.) Hohenems
Situated in the western part of Austria, Hohenems is an excellent destination for history enthusiasts. One cannot miss the 12th-century Altens Castle, ideal for leisurely strolls, and the Stadtpfarrkirche, a parish church that has stood for nearly five centuries. The area is rich in historical architecture, offering visitors a chance to engage with Austria’s past.
Additionally, Hohenems lies in proximity to the breathtaking Austrian Alps, presenting ample opportunities for skiing in winter and hiking during the warm summer months.
4.) Wachau
The Wachau region, while perhaps not the first destination that springs to mind when considering Austria, should certainly be on your itinerary. Just a short drive from Vienna, it features a stunning landscape filled with local vineyards, scenic river trails, and historical castles. Upon arrival, explore the Wachau World Heritage Trail and stop at towns such as Spitz, Joching, and the Holzapfel Vineyards for a tasting experience.
5.) Ehrwald
Located in the Reutte district, Ehrwald is an idyllic destination for outdoor enthusiasts. Nestled along the border with Germany, it is dominated by the impressive Zugspitze, Germany’s highest peak. Once here, enjoy the extensive trail network and afterwards treat yourself to a hearty beef dumpling stew at Holzerstubn—an authentic Austrian dish.
6.) Wildsee Lake & Seefeld
Seefeld is an exceptional location, attractive throughout the year. Nestled beside Lake Wildsee, it features the Church of St. Oswald, and during the summer months, visitors can engage in paddling and swimming on the lake. For hiking enthusiasts, trails lead to Kaltwassersee, offering stunning vistas of the region.
7.) Melk
Downstream on the Danube, a short drive from Wachau, lies Melk, a picturesque town worth exploring. Spend several hours discovering Melk Abbey, a stunning monastery with breathtaking interiors that oversees the surrounding landscape. Although photography is not permitted inside, the visit is absolutely worth it.
8.) St. Gilgen
Nestled alongside Lake Wolfgangsee, St. Gilgen is an idyllic destination in northern Austria. While there, take the scenic steam train to Schafberg Mountain, renowned for its stunning views. Additionally, the picturesque boat trip around the lake offers unique sights, including a former naval officer boarding school.

Situated on the shores of Lake Zell, this charming town transforms into a winter wonderland perfect for skiing and snowshoeing during the colder months. Conversely, summer visitors are encouraged to explore the vibrant countryside and the stunning natural beauty of the area.
10.) Mondsee
Not far from Salzburg, Mondsee is an ideal spot for a day trip from the city. Visitors will certainly enjoy the captivating lake surroundings while engaging in various water sports from the local yacht club. In town, the market square, former monastery, and parish church are all worth visiting.
11.) Gmunden
Brimming with history, Gmunden features beautiful castles, historical churches, and scenic views along the banks of Traunsee Lake. Once a retreat for the affluent, Gmunden today welcomes all visitors to discover its charm, particularly Schloss Ort, a stunning castle that rises from the lake.
12.) Pabneukirchen
Pabneukirchen offers a glimpse into Austria’s classic countryside, attracting fewer tourists, and creating a more intimate experience. Staying at a farm like Wanderreithof Heimelsteiner provides delightful experiences, including horseback riding and engaging with local culture around a BBQ fire.
