This easy round-trip excursion from the bustling Lemesos (Limassol) serves as a splendid introduction to the island’s diverse offerings, blending sea, sand, historical ruins, charming villages, and local wines. There are ample opportunities to stop along the route; while the circuit can be completed in a day, consider extending your journey with an overnight stay in a picturesque mountain village.

Begin your adventure by heading north from Lemesos into the hills. The first stop is Doros to visit its 14th-century church. For lunch, enjoy the lovely village of Laneia, where golden-hued buildings dot the cobblestone streets. Lose yourself amidst the winding roads of Lofou and Silikou, taking frequent breaks to appreciate the scenic views of the sea and terraced farms. Look for delightful wineries such as Ayla Mavri, and make an interesting stop at the charming village of Vouni.

Next, head south towards the coast to Ancient Kourion, a stunning archaeological site that showcases the island’s rich historical significance. Following this, enjoy a scenic drive around the Akrotiri Peninsula, stopping to see the Holy Monastery of St Nicholas of the Cats. This day-long journey from Kyrenia (Girne) in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus leads you to undiscovered sands and quaint villages, with crumbling Orthodox basilicas nestled amidst dramatic landscapes.

Beginning in Kyrenia, explore its enchanting medieval harbor and castle. As you travel east along the coastal route, take in the picturesque scenery, stopping at Little Ozanköy, famous for its olive oil and medieval church. Just a short distance away, Çatalköy (Agios Epiktitos) features fascinating caves that once sheltered the hermit Epiktitos during the 13th century. Be sure to pause at Alagadı Beach, which is home to a local sea turtle conservation initiative.

Take a detour inland through Bahçeli (Kalograia) to view the stunning Byzantine Antifonitis Church adorned with beautiful domes and frescos. Return to the coast and continue your journey eastward to visit Kantara Castle, where breathtaking views await those who climb its ramparts. Lemesos (Limassol)–Lara Beach; 113km [70 miles]; allow two days

Traveling west from Lemesos, you’ll discover some of the most stunning sights in Cyprus. Kick off your adventure at the stunning clifftop ruins of Ancient Kourion. From its Roman amphitheater, the view of the sea is truly captivating. A short distance away, you can find Kourion Beach, which is perfect for a relaxing afternoon. The bistros at Avdimou Beach also make an ideal stop to enjoy a flavorful seafood lunch.

Now strengthen your spirit at Aphrodite’s Rock (also known as Petra tou Romiou). Spend some time on the pebbled shore and take in the stunning views. The charming city of Pafos is another fantastic stop, known for its famed archaeological site, which once served as the heart of ancient Cyprus in the 4th century BCE. Marvel at the Roman mosaics before wandering the enchanting medieval alleys of Pafos, finally relaxing at a seafront cafe along the palm-lined promenade.

As you continue west, Coral Bay and Agios Georgios offer plenty of entertainment for families, with watersports and ice cream vendors all around. Consider a short detour inland to hike through the stunning Avgas (Avakas) Gorge, which is approximately 3.5km (2.2 miles) one way, winding through lush vegetation until it reveals rocky crevices. Conclude your journey at the pristine and secluded Lara Beach, a vital nesting site for some of the Mediterranean’s last sea turtle populations.

This picturesque loop takes you away from the lively city of Larnaka into the serene hills, where you can visit ancient villages producing traditional Cypriot crafts. Start north of the city in Pyrga, where you can see the 14th-century Lusignan Chapelle Royale (marked as “Medieval Chapel”), dedicated to St Catherine and showcasing beautiful frescos.

A brief drive west leads you to Kornos, a village renowned for its pottery, where local artisans sell their stunning ceramics. The winding routes will take you to Lefkara, known for its lace and silverwork; explore the Lefkara Folk Art Museum for more insights into this traditional craft. Journey southwest to the charming stone villages of Kato Drys and Vavla, filled with beautifully restored homes.

As you descend towards the coast, make a stop at Choirokoitia, an impressive prehistoric site, then continue to Zygi, a quaint fishing village celebrated for its delectable fish tavernas. Nearby Maroni is the perfect stop for seasonal local cucumbers. Proceed northeast along the coast to Kiti, where the historic church of Panagia Angeloktisti stands. Kyrenia (Girne)–Famagusta (Gazimağusa); 194km [120 miles]; allow two days

This enriching journey covers all the key stops for an unforgettable experience in North Cyprus. Starting in Kyrenia, head inland towards Bellapais Abbey, celebrated by writer Lawrence Durrell, where you can embrace the essence of serene village life as you explore the charming alleyways surrounding the ruins.

Then proceed to the enchanting remnants of St Hilarion Castle; an invigorating climb to St John’s Tower unveils striking vistas extending as far as Turkey’s Taurus Mountains on clear days. Next, head toward the old town of Lapta (Lapithos), situated above the seafront, where traditional Cypriot charm flourishes.

As you journey northwest, breathe in the fragrant air laden with citrus from surrounding orange groves. Stop to admire the iconic blue-toned frescos at Agios Mamas Church in Morfou (Güzelyurt). Not to be missed are the coastal ruins of Ancient Soloi and the remnants of Ancient Vouni, perched atop cliffs.

Begin your eastward journey towards North Nicosia (Lefkoşa), the divided capital of the island.
