Summary
Introduction to Maligne Canyon
Upon arriving in Jasper, I had a strong desire to explore and hike through Maligne Canyon.
Interestingly, I discovered Maligne Canyon only a few days prior to departing London for Alberta. Once I learned of its existence, I was compelled to include it in my itinerary, particularly in the winter months.
Planning Your Visit
It is worth mentioning that I wasn’t alone in my ignorance; a Canadian couple reached out to me via Instagram, expressing surprised that many visitors to Jasper National Park were unaware of the canyon’s stunning offerings.
Consequently, we initially intended to participate in the Maligne Canyon ice walk the previous day. However, due to a scheduling oversight, we arrived in Jasper just after the guide had left with the group.
Experience the Hike
Fortunately, the guide from Sundog Tours offered multiple trips per day, allowing us to reschedule for the following day.
It is crucial to emphasize the necessity of hiking Maligne Canyon with a qualified guide. The potential hazards of the area, including wildlife and the river beneath the ice, necessitate expert guidance. This principle applies universally to most of Alberta’s premier hikes, reinforcing the importance of safety.
Safety Considerations
Additionally, the guides provide waterproof boots and ice grips to ensure a safe and comfortable hiking experience.
The canyon, although visually appealing in the summer, transforms into an extraordinary wonderland during winter.
For instance, its frozen state allows visitors to traverse right through the canyon, navigating the stunning ice formations that develop from cascading water drops, transforming them into breathtaking frozen waterfalls.
Conclusion
Maligne Canyon is undoubtedly a compelling reason to visit Jasper. The stunning winter landscape and unique hiking opportunities make this destination a must-see.
We are now setting off for lunch followed by an exciting activity—more details to follow in the subsequent article.
