Seven Mile Beach
Seven Mile Beach in Negril was initially marketed on tourism advertisements as “seven miles of nothing but you and the sea.” It is true that sunbathers continue to recline half-submerged in the gentle surf, with the fragrant aroma of ganja smoke permeating the breeze; however, the beach has undergone significant transformation.
Currently, it boasts a variety of restaurants, bars, and nightlife venues, in addition to offering every conceivable water sport. Although the beach remains visually stunning, those seeking solitude may need to explore alternative locales.
It is important to note that Seven Mile Beach is only 4 miles (6.5km) long.
Frenchman’s Cove
This picturesque cove, located just east of Port Antonio, features a petite yet idyllic white-sand beach where fresh water from a river seamlessly feeds into the ocean. The area is managed by the Frenchman’s Cove resort, which provides a snack bar that serves jerk chicken and fish, alfresco showers, restrooms, secure parking, and opportunities for boat tours to the Blue Lagoon.
Ocho Rios Bay Beach
The primary beach in Ocho Rios, favored by tourists, is the extensive fenced crescent known as Turtle Beach or Ocho Rios Bay. This beachfront extends east from the Turtle Towers condominiums to the Renaissance Jamaica Grande Resort. Amenities include changing rooms and palm trees that provide shade. Although it offers a pleasant atmosphere, it may feel overwhelmed by the presence of cruise ships during port calls.
Mahogany Beach
The small, attractive Mahogany Beach in Ocho Rios is especially favored by locals; it flourishes on weekends with lively music, enticing aromas of jerk cooking, and spontaneous soccer matches. The beach is located approximately one mile (1km) east of the town center; taxis are the fastest way to access this locale.
James Bond Beach
This appealing stretch of white sand in Oracabessa remains relatively quiet during the week but becomes lively on weekends. For a more engaging experience, consider renting jet skis or embarking on boat trips along the coast. A small bar and restaurant serve refreshments, and the beach frequently hosts large music events—check local flyers in Ocho Rios for upcoming attractions.
Doctor’s Cave Beach
Contrary to what its name might suggest, Doctor’s Cave Beach is actually the most renowned beach in Montego Bay. Established as a bathing club in 1906, the beach acquired its name when English chiropractor Sir Herbert Barker asserted the waters possessed therapeutic qualities. It has become a favored location since then.
The beach itself features a graceful arc of soft sand, resembling a deep-blue jewel that is adorned with floating dive platforms and frequented by both tourists and locals expressing their enjoyment.
Comprehensive amenities are available, including a restaurant, a grill bar, an internet café, multiple water sports, and various items for rent (beach chairs, towels, snorkeling equipment).
Boston Bay Beach
Boston Bay Beach is nestled within a picturesque cove. Although its golden sand attracts many, the shape of the bay along with prevailing weather conditions creates an ideal surfing atmosphere. Facilities include showers, changing rooms, a lifeguard, and a modest restaurant.
Winnifred Beach
Situated on a cliff eight miles (13km) east of Port Antonio lies the tiny village of Fairy Hill. By following the steep road downhill, you will arrive at Winnifred Beach, another stunning stretch of sand that surpasses many prominent locations.
This beach is the only completely public option along this coastal stretch and has an excellent atmosphere, with food stands, weekend sound systems, and locals from diverse backgrounds. If you choose to drive, consider making a donation for parking, as the beach depends on public contributions for maintenance.
Discovery Bay
This stunning horseshoe-shaped bay, located five miles (8km) west of Runaway Bay and five miles (8km) east of Rio Bueno, serves as a favored resort destination for locals who are drawn to Puerto Seco Beach. Many of Jamaica’s affluent families maintain holiday villas nestled in the hills in this region. However, the town itself has limited attractions.
Fisherman’s Beach
This beach is centrally located, extending east from the Treasure Beach Hotel as far as Jack Sprat Beach. It is monitored by a notable buttonwood tree that has long captured the attention of poets, painters, and wood-carvers who showcase their craft. This location is perfect for sunbathing and swimming, as well as being a sought-after venue for sunset viewings.
Bamboo Beach Club (Reggae Beach)
This pristine yellow-sand beach is devoid of vendors and is favored by tourists, attributed to the elevated admission fee. Locals continue to refer to it by its former name, Reggae Beach. Kayak rentals are available, along with changing rooms, and an array of jerk chicken and fish dishes can be easily obtained. On busy days with a cruise ship in port, the area can become exceptionally crowded.
Parottee Beach
Located several miles south of Black River, Parottee Beach effectively continues the stretch of Heavy Sands beach, characterized by dark sand adorned with shells and abundant clean ocean. It is excellent for swimming, though caution is advised when venturing too far, as it may leave one alone in this vast expanse.
Lime Cay
The idyllic Lime Cay, situated in Port Royal, is one of several uninhabited, white sand–edged coral cays located two miles (3km) offshore from Port Royal. Featured in the climactic scene of the film The Harder They Come, it is an ideal site for sunbathing and snorkeling, with shacks offering food and beverages.
Hellshire Beach
Hellshire Beach is a vibrant locale characterized by numerous brightly colored huts and stalls selling beer, jerk chicken, and fish. This lively spot comes alive on weekends, particularly with sound systems present on Sunday nights. In the mornings, fishing boats return with their catch. However, regardless of the day, it presents an intriguing glimpse into the genuine side of Jamaica.
