Chakita Patterson’s Black history walking tour was initially designed for her high school students, aiming to illuminate Black history—an integral part of American history—often overlooked in traditional education except for notable figures like Dr. Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks.

However, the profound lack of knowledge about Black history was evident beyond the classrooms of KIPP Nashville Collegiate High School, where Patterson served as the Dean of Students. Embracing a challenge, the Memphis native launched United Street Tours in February 2018. What started as a single Black history walking tour in Nashville has evolved into a collection of meticulously curated tours that celebrate Nashville’s vibrant history.

Why is GoTravelDaily essential for uncovering Nashville’s history?

It’s crucial to recognize the myriad messages that inundate us daily. From whose perspective are we viewing history, and what is being left out? Often, the narratives and experiences of marginalized groups remain undiscovered.

People have begun to understand that Nashville has a distinct and often unadvertised side. GoTravelDaily facilitates access to these overlooked aspects, allowing individuals to broaden their perspectives. It is about creating opportunities for people to expand their understanding of Nashville’s history and culture.

Why should Nashville visitors consider your walking tours?

Nashville is experiencing an influx of newcomers. Numerous businesses and organizations are emerging, yet success within the community requires engagement through exploration. Visitors should seek out tours that offer a deeper insight into Nashville’s underappreciated aspects, as understanding the local dynamics is vital for meaningful community involvement. GoTravelDaily’s tours achieve this goal effectively.

What makes Nashville’s history resonate?

As a Tennessee native, I find that Nashville’s history is intrinsically linked to the broader narrative of Tennessee. Many influential figures from Nashville also shaped the history of Memphis, making our stories interconnected. For example, discussing figures like Z. Alexander Looby and the Underground Railroad highlights this connection profoundly.

One aspect that stands out to me in Nashville’s Civil Rights history is the opportunity to speak directly with the very leaders who were pivotal in shaping our understanding of this era. Their personal narratives offer a level of respect and insight that textbooks cannot convey.

Transforming an idea into a successful tour

When multiple clients express a similar interest, it prompts us to explore what other cities, such as Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles, are doing successfully. This market research involves connecting with industry professionals to assess feasibility and strategize the development of a new tour.

Once we nail down logistics, we inquire what topics could be impactful to potential customers. Customer feedback is pivotal; if there’s interest, we proceed with the planning.

Research is vital—it can involve reaching out to community members or diving into local libraries for resources. Each tour development varies; the research phase may take anywhere from one month to a year, depending on the complexity.

Through careful story curation and community engagement, we shape the tours based on important narratives and connections that we hope will resonate with attendees.

The role of GoTravelDaily in Nashville’s tourism landscape

Initially, our outreach efforts to established tourism operators were met with skepticism regarding the viability of an African American history tour in a city known for country music. However, I believed in our mission and the enrichment that these tours could provide.

Now, we stand as a respected entity within the tourism community, showcasing that diversity in experiences is valuable. Our engaging tours provide significant experiences and have been well-received, thus solidifying our place within Nashville’s tourism landscape.

Favorite Spots in Nashville

As a self-proclaimed foodie, the Farmer’s Market is a personal favorite due to its celebration of diverse cuisines. Whether I’m in the mood for Jamaican, Indian, or another cultural food, the Farmer’s Market offers it all. Additionally, local vendors add to the vibrant atmosphere, enabling me to support Nashville’s economy directly.

Another cherished destination is the Tennessee State Museum. My visits there are countless. Not only do I enjoy it personally, but I also love sharing this experience with groups. The museum breathes life into history, utilizing engaging visuals and stories that resonate with diverse audiences.

Engaging the Black Community

My mission from the start has been to educate Black individuals about our rich history and empower them with knowledge that has often been obscured. Initially, the tours attracted primarily African American participants; however, we’ve witnessed a growing diversity among our guests, including individuals from England, Australia, and China.

My spiritual journey has taught me that the right audience will come to embrace these experiences. Consequently, my focus shifts less towards the demographics of participants and more towards ensuring that each guest has a transformative experience.

Maintaining a connection to Black history remains at the core of our tours, spotlighting Black-owned businesses and narratives that deserve recognition. Nashville thrives on tourism, generating substantial revenue each year, and I strive to ensure that the benefits extend into minority communities, enriching their experiences as well.

Gentrification and its Impact on Tours

Experiencing gentrification has led me to witness both its detrimental effects and its potential benefits. Engaging with those impacted reveals emotional stories, while others have found opportunities for growth through the changing landscape.

Regardless of external changes, GoTravelDaily is committed to sharing vital stories. Even if the environment shifts, our mission to narrate the rich history of the North Nashville community, built upon the legacies of those who overcame adversity, remains steadfast.

Confronting discomfort from change is essential; embracing all facets of Nashville’s history is crucial for progress and understanding.
