Croatia and Montenegro: Dubrovnik to Lovćen National Park

Distance: 65 miles/105km

Begin this cross-border trip through the breathtaking Dinaric Alps by taking the D8 from Dubrovnik, Croatia to Perast, Montenegro. While these neighboring countries share the gorgeous Adriatic coastline, prepare for a change of scenery as the fairly flat topography of Croatia’s southern corner turns into the dark, craggy peaks of Montenegro.

Upon arrival at the quaint town of Perast, anchored on the Unesco-listed Bay of Kotor, you will be enchanted by its peaceful atmosphere, baroque palazzi, and 16 stunning churches. The top attractions are Gospa od Škrpjela and Sveti Djordje, accessible by boat.

Continue by driving 30km from Perast to the bay’s highlight, the city of Kotor. Dive into medieval history by climbing the city walls to St John’s Hill – a fun though rigorous hike up ancient fortifications dating back to the 9th century.

Continuing to Veliko Târnovo, this final 30-minute leg is ranked among the top scenic drives in Europe—featuring astounding views. Meander through the lush Valley of the Roses, known for cultivating some of the rarest rose varieties in the world. If visiting in May or June, enjoy the heavenly scent as you breeze through the valley. Additional captivating stops include the Russian-style golden-domed church in Shipka and Tryavna, famous for its wooden craftsmanship.

Albania: Vlora to Himara via the Llogara Pass

Distance: 45 miles/72km

This drive features sweeping views of the Dukat Valley to the north and the Albanian Riviera to the south. From Vlora, travel south on SH8, a smooth highway cut directly into the mountainside. Bosnia and Hercegovina: Sarajevo to Kravica Waterfall

Distance: 111 miles/178km

Travel along Highway E73/M17, parallel to the turquoise Neretva River, which flows through Bosnia and Hercegovina towards the Adriatic Sea. The river irrigates one of the most fertile valleys in the Balkans. From Sarajevo to Mostar, pass by the historic town of Konjic, known for its beautiful stone bridge. However, be prepared to marvel at the extraordinary scenery along the way!

Arriving in Mostar, explore the charming cobblestone streets filled with markets selling local jewelry, pottery, and flatware.
