Rome’s First Emperor Mausoleum Finally Opens After 15 Years of Restoration

The Mausoleo of Augusto: A Historical Marvel in Rome

Twenty centuries after its construction, the tomb of Ancient Rome’s first emperor will finally open to the public in 2021.

The Mausoleo of Augusto is dedicated to Augustus, also known as Octavian. He took the reins of power in Rome from Julius Caesar after his assassination. This pivotal figure transformed the Roman Republic into the Roman Empire. Augustus himself ordered the construction of this monumental building over thirty years before his death in 14 CE and was interred there alongside other members of his dynasty, the Julio-Claudians.

The Mausoleo is a magnificent circular tomb, recognized as one of the largest in both Rome and the ancient world. Archaeologists believe it was originally adorned with white marble and elaborate decorations, featuring a bronze statue of Augustus atop its summit.

However, unlike other celebrated Ancient Roman sites like the Colosseum and the Roman Forum, the Mausoleo has remained largely inaccessible to the public and has suffered extensive decay.

Consequently, extensive restoration projects commenced in 2008, spanning nearly thirteen years and costing over €20 million. This initiative not only revitalized the Mausoleo but also enhanced the surrounding square. The initial phase involved archaeological excavation and restoration work, while the latter phase aimed at preparing the Mausoleo for visitors, incorporating essential infrastructure, informative panels, and navigational aids.

The Mausoleo of Augusto opened to the public on March 1, 2021, with free admission until April 21, 2021. However, visitors must have tickets, which can be acquired in advance. After this initial period, only residents of Rome will have the privilege of free entry.
