Summary:
V&A Dundee: A Remarkable Design Museum
During our academic years in St Andrews, there were discussions regarding the demolition of an existing structure on the waterfront in Dundee to pave the way for the V&A Dundee.
Although I typically do not follow such developments, my friend Lloyd is quite attentive, and upon deciding to explore Scotland, this destination was non-negotiable for him.
The V&A Dundee is located on the site of the former leisure center, which I mentioned in my previous discussion. Rest assured, the leisure center remains in operation, albeit in a more modern facility. The museum is a welcomed addition to Dundee’s skyline.
Glamis Castle: A Royal Heritage
Upon arrival at the bridge leading into Dundee, the waterfront captures attention promptly, marking a stark contrast to its previous unattractive structures.
The architectural marvel that is V&A Dundee, designed to emulate the East Scotland cliffs, greatly elevates the area’s aesthetic appeal compared to its former state.
The interior of the V&A Dundee is equally impressive, showcasing exquisite examples of Scottish design. It is noteworthy that this is the first V&A design museum established outside London.
Current exhibitions at the museum (subject to change) include ‘Ocean Liners: Speed and Style’, offering fascinating insights into the history of ocean travel accompanied by remarkable items, including Cartier jewelry once owned by prestigious passengers.
Dining at Flame Tree Café and Glenesk Hotel
After a fulfilling visit, we found ourselves at the Flame Tree Café, a reflection of Dundee’s continuing evolution with a menu featuring vegan and vegetarian options.
For meat enthusiasts, there are also traditional dishes available. My choice was a Coronation Chicken jacket potato, a nostalgic nod to my time in Edinburgh, and it did not disappoint. Each mouthful evoked fond memories of leisurely lunches in the Scottish capital.
Our day culminated at the Glenesk Hotel, where an exquisite dinner and whisky tasting awaited us. Surprisingly, this establishment boasts the largest collection of commercially available whiskies globally, as certified by Guinness World Records.
Our whisky tasting experience was enlightening; we learned that adding a touch of water to whisky can significantly enhance its flavors. Additionally, understanding the distinctions between single malt, single grain, and blended whiskies transformed my perspective on this traditional spirit.
Our meal was a culinary delight, comprising lamb shank for me, beef stew for Lloyd, and concluding with sticky toffee pudding for both of us—a quintessential way to cap off our exploration of these two Scottish treasures.
