Discover Unique Barbershops Worldwide on This YouTube Channel

The coronavirus pandemic has sadly forced many of us to cancel our travel plans. However, the virus can’t stop us from satisfying our wanderlust virtually. One YouTube travel channel we are loving right now is ‘Haircut Harry’. Unlike many similar channels, the host observes his destinations from a chair at the local barbershop.

There’s nothing more universal—and yet more local—than getting a haircut. This is the premise behind the rapidly growing YouTube channel ‘Haircut Harry’, created by a British/American couple living in the United States as they travel the world in search of authentic cuts. While Harry is not his real name, the couple prefers to remain anonymous. Harry is the man with the hair, while his partner captures the adventures on camera. The creators recently discussed their inspirations and learnings along the way.

The Origins of ‘Haircut Harry’

Harry filmed his first haircut video in 1999 with a bulky Canon XL1 camcorder in a small shop in Aurangabad, India. This was before the official launch of YouTube in 2012, when the goal was to create a travel vlog.

During his time in India, Harry needed a haircut, spotted a barbershop, and decided to film the chaotic atmosphere outside versus the calmness within. He had no idea that the barber would not only cut his hair but also provide a shave and a head massage—quite an unforgettable experience!

Soon after launching the channel, they began visiting over 40 countries around the world, accumulating around 202,000 subscribers and receiving 4 million views a month. The channel’s 100 or so videos boast more than 71 million views. Viewers flock to the channel for entertainment, relaxation, inspiration, and even barbering tips.

Sitting Down for a Trim

The videos typically range from 10 to 40 minutes, focusing on a single haircut each time. The familiar narrative unfolds seamlessly: Harry settles into the chair, chats with the barber, and undergoes the transformation, culminating in an exciting reveal.

Haircut Harry’s charm emerges through the raw, unedited feel of the videos, showcasing the barber’s expertise alongside Harry’s relatable moments of navigating small talk. There’s a satisfying element in watching the barber methodically trim and snip Harry’s hair, often accompanied by humorous reactions, especially when unexpected tools, like a straight razor, make an appearance.

Avoiding a Haircut Disaster

What happens when things go wrong? Although bad haircuts are rare, Harry recalls a specific moment in Bamako, Mali, where he encountered a less-trained barber. The result was quite a disaster, leading Harry to make the bold decision to shave his head!

Despite challenges over the years, they have gained valuable experience not only in video production but also in managing a small business. Harry remains passionate about barbershop culture, appreciating the connections formed through shared local experiences.

Harry’s Tips for Getting the Right Cut

  • Consult: Discuss your desired cut with your barber before the process begins. A trained barber can provide valuable insights on suitable styles for your hair type.
  • Communicate: Share details about your lifestyle and occupation. This information can help the barber suggest a haircut that fits your professional requirements.
  • Visit: Explore the local barbershop environment. Consider the atmosphere, styles, and the overall look of clients leaving the shop.
