You can imagine my excitement! London holds significant meaning for us, and there are an abundance of locations to explore.

Now, let’s get straight to the point. The neighborhood I have selected is Peckham. It is a fantastic yet often underestimated area of our city, and I am eager to showcase some of my favorite spots and venues you should consider visiting in Peckham.

Why visit Peckham?

The charm of London is defined by its incredible neighborhoods, and this is particularly evident in areas such as Peckham. Nestled in the southeast of London, this locality often does not receive the acknowledgment it unquestionably merits, yet it offers a plethora of exceptional activities for exploration.

Iconic locations such as Shoreditch and Covent Garden often capture attention, yet there exists a multitude of more captivating spots to discover in London if you are willing to look beyond the surface. (In fact, Shoreditch was once regarded as one of those “less glamorous” areas before it became the popular enclave it is known as today).

Whether you are a London local or merely an admirer of the city, you will undoubtedly encounter an abundance of engaging activities and experiences to appreciate in Peckham.

1.) Try some jellied eels at M. Manze

Located on Peckham High Street, M. Manze is the oldest (and still family-owned) establishment serving pie and mash in London. If you yearn for a taste of traditional London, this is the destination you must visit.

Ensure to sample some jellied eels as well! Whether you relish it or disdain it, it serves as a significant aspect of London’s culinary heritage that one must experience. Contrary to its reputation, it tastes far less intimidating than it sounds and is undoubtedly one of the best activities in Peckham if you aim to delve into the city’s gastronomic history.

2.) Gorge on Jollof Rice at Agrobeso African Cuisine

Reflecting on London’s diversity in cuisine, Agrobeso African Cuisine specializes in serving some of the most delightful Jollof Rice and meat stews you will ever encounter. It is an essential experience in Peckham for those wishing to indulge in authentic Nigerian flavors south of the river.

Within this venue, the cuisine takes center stage, so step inside, place your order, and relish their superbly spicy offerings. For a more adventurous culinary experience, consider trying their pounded yam or eba with a flavorful stew. This is as authentically Nigerian as it gets. 😍

Should you find it crowded, consider visiting Nim’s Kitchen, which, although lacking seating, offers a substantial selection of delectable food options.

3.) Dine at the Peckham Refreshment Rooms

This is an exceptional location for brunch or lunch that is a short walk from Peckham Rye Station.

Upon entering, you will be welcomed with quintessential British favorites. The bubble and squeak dish is absolutely fantastic! It consists of a traditional combination of vegetables, potatoes, and occasionally meat, griddled and served piping hot.

Traditionally, this dish served as a means of utilizing leftovers and has now evolved into a culinary staple on its own.

4.) Enjoy a cocktail at Peckham Levels

Follow the neon signs along Rye Lane and enter the vibrant corridor leading to Peckham Levels.

Inside, you will encounter a diverse array of culinary spots, artistic endeavors, restaurants, and even cocktail bars, all situated within this former car park. While that may sound unconventional, I assure you that this experience ranks among the top activities in Peckham for enjoying a drink or two.

The vibrant atmosphere is enhanced by the presence of various eateries and artistic installations, making it a delightful stop during your exploration of Peckham.

5.) Watch the sunset from Frank’s

During the summer months, Frank’s provides guests with the opportunity to enjoy vistas of London alongside a delightful array of beverages.

Located on the rooftop of a car park (surprisingly attractive), Frank’s is an ideal venue for witnessing the sunset over London while sipping on refreshing Pimm’s, sangria, or local brews.

As daylight transitions into night, Frank’s transforms into a lively space that attracts a diverse crowd, making it one of the premier activities in Peckham for socializing with friends.

6.) Find some vinyl and local brews at Rye Wax

This location consistently surprises me. From the exterior, Rye Wax may not appear remarkable, but once inside, it exudes an extraordinary ambiance.

This cozy spot features an extensive selection of vintage vinyl, along with a variety of retro board games for an entertaining time. The venue often has a live DJ spinning tracks that are both refreshing and nostalgic.

Hence, if you have an appreciation for vinyl, this is an excellent location and one of the best experiences in Peckham to enjoy.

7.) Explore the South London Gallery

Arguably one of the most charming and intimate galleries in South London, The South London Gallery is open most days (excluding Mondays) and offers free entry.

This Victorian establishment is a beautifully crafted destination worth visiting, particularly since their exhibitions and residencies change rather quickly.

Consequently, each visit presents a different experience, so seize the opportunity to visit when you can.

8.) Get the heart racing at The Yard

I may not be a gym enthusiast, but The Yard in Peckham has established a remarkable CrossFit center located near the Copeland Gallery. If you are eager for a workout, this is the ideal place to go.

However, if you prefer dessert instead of exercise, you might consider heading to the Refreshment Rooms for a sweet treat.

This venue is undoubtedly a top option for fitness enthusiasts visiting London, although it may not appeal to those uninterested in workout regimens.

9.) Head to K-ink for some of the best tattoos in the city

While you may think about leaving London with a classic keychain or a London bus magnet, if you desire something more enduring, be sure to visit K-ink.

The dedicated team at K-ink takes pride in their artistry, delivering some of the most beautiful tattoos you can find. I still haven’t gathered the courage to get inked myself, but this is a highly recommended place I frequently hear great things about.

If you are inclined to get a tattoo, make sure to schedule your appointment in advance and allow sufficient time for your sessions. A half-finished tattoo is rarely a pleasant sight!

10.) Go thrift shopping at TRAID Peckham

Situated on Rye Lane, TRAID Peckham is a trendy thrift store known for its collection of iconic pieces that are certain to catch your eye. If you’re on the hunt for 1980’s tracksuits, vintage varsity jackets, or sparkly slippers, this is the place to be.

However, do not blame me if you exit with a bag filled with clashing and wonderfully eccentric outfits.

11.) Grab some Nollywood classics from Rye Lane Market

Visiting Rye Lane Market is an experience unto itself and an excellent location for sourcing the finest spices, plantains, and even discovering a good deal on Nollywood films.

I can assure you that the selection of Nollywood titles is extensive—several hundred seem to be available at any given time. Therefore, if you are a fan of Nollywood cinema, be sure to check this spot out.

12.) Find some art at MOCA London

The Museum of Contemporary Art London is a remarkable venue that many visitors may not be aware is located in Peckham. This has certainly been my experience until after a few visits.

Located within minutes of Peckham Rye Station, it houses an impressive array of rotating installations that are both beautiful and thought-provoking.

Make sure to coordinate your visit to align with their hours, which are Thursday and Friday from 2 PM to 6 PM and Saturday from 12 PM to 4 PM
