Summary
As one of the larger Canary Islands, Fuerteventura offers a remarkable diversity of experiences and landscapes ideal for exploration. Its unique blend of attractions makes it an exceptional destination. Following our recent trip, I am eager to elaborate on the most captivating activities to enjoy in Fuerteventura.
Similar to its counterparts Gran Canaria, Tenerife, and Lanzarote, Fuerteventura is often regarded as a hidden gem, sometimes perceived as too mainstream for certain travelers. However, this notion is irrelevant considering the array of stunning activities available on the island. It is essential to appreciate a destination based on its unique beauty and the rich experiences it offers, not just its accessibility or popularity among sun-seekers.
With this in consideration, I would like to present my top recommendations for things to do during your visit to Fuerteventura. It truly is a stunning destination. Enjoy your exploration!
1.) Barranco De Los Enamorados
If you seek tranquility away from the beach, Barranco De Los Enamorados is an ideal choice. Although not widely recognized, it is undoubtedly one of the best hidden gems in Fuerteventura.
Finding this location independently can be challenging due to its obscurity. Therefore, enlisting the assistance of a local guide or an organized excursion through your accommodation may be beneficial. Patricia, an Airbnb Guide, conducts private tours if you wish to arrange one in advance.
A car is necessary to access this area, so ensure transportation arrangements are in place prior to your visit. Additionally, wearing appropriate footwear is advised; the trek is manageable but not suitable for flip-flops.
2.) Playa del Matorral
Located along the southern coastline near Morro del Jable, Playa del Matorral boasts a stunning beach and a nature reserve, making it a perfect spot for surf enthusiasts.
For those who prefer a little activity, numerous trails wind through the nature reserve, leading to the lighthouse and offering opportunities for exploration.
It’s important to note that, as with several beaches in Fuerteventura, clothing is optional, particularly to the left of the beach. However, there are plenty of shaded areas with rental umbrellas and beachside establishments offering cocktails for a more relaxed experience.
After an enjoyable day by the sea, a visit to the nearby town of Morro Jable is recommended for dining. For a taste of authentic local cuisine, head to La Bodega de Jandia for traditional tapas and delectable Iberian ham. Reservations are advisable during peak dining times.
3.) Corralejo Natural Park
Regarded as home to the finest sand dunes in the Canary Islands, Corralejo Natural Park is a must-visit destination in Fuerteventura.
This vast expanse of dunes along the northeastern coastline offers an entirely different landscape, making it an ideal location for exploration, especially for those staying in Corralejo.
Don’t forget to bring ample sunscreen and water; dehydration can strike quickly in the sun-drenched dunes!
4.) Playa de Cofete
Frequently referred to as one of the premier beaches in the Canary Islands, Playa de Cofete is an essential stop for any visitor to Fuerteventura.
Characterized by its pristine and dramatic coastline, it serves as a picturesque backdrop, though be advised that the waves can be quite powerful here, making swimming hazardous on some days. The journey may be challenging due to road conditions, so consider 4X4 tours departing from Morro Jable for a smoother experience.
5.) Calderon Hondo
Calderon Hondo is easily accessible for those wishing to explore on their own, though guided options are also available. If you choose to take the scenic route, a well-established path is available at the trail’s fork.
For a leisurely walk, the designated tourist route takes approximately two hours and rewards visitors with breathtaking views of the crater, showcasing a stunning perspective of Fuerteventura.
6.) Las Playitas
Although a modest location, Las Playitas serves as a lovely stop along the eastern coast, providing an opportunity to stretch your legs while enjoying the seaside and savoring delicious seafood at Restaurante Las Playas.
While it may not demand an extensive visit, it is certainly worth a stop if you are exploring the area.
7.) Mirador Sicasumbre
A visit to Mirador Sicasumbre, situated along the inland road (FV-605), provides an opportunity to revel in one of the island’s most scenic viewpoints.
The vista encompasses the entirety of Fuerteventura, especially delightful on clear days. Evening stargazing, free from light pollution, is particularly spectacular, allowing you to witness a remarkable array of celestial bodies.
8.) Betancuria
Betancuria is widely considered one of the most picturesque towns in Fuerteventura. This charming destination, with a population of less than a thousand, possesses an enchanting character, making it a worthwhile visit.
While in Betancuria, explore the cobbled streets, visit the main square, and do not miss the chance to enter the local church. It’s an ideal stop for a few hours, especially for lunch at one of the cozy cafés or restaurants.
Be sure to try some of the delectable Majorero cheese made from local goat’s milk—one of the culinary highlights that render Betancuria one of Fuerteventura’s deliciously cheesy spots! 😉
We particularly enjoyed our visit to Finca Pepe, located just a few minutes from the quaint streets of Betancuria, where we experienced the cheese-making process, usually conducted in the morning.
9.) Fuerteventura Windmills
As you traverse Fuerteventura, it is likely you will encounter at least one of the island’s iconic windmills, particularly in La Olivia, Antigua, and Tefia.
While La Olivia windmill is easily located, visitors can also explore the Antiqua Windmill, which showcases the historical significance of this traditional property.
10.) Morro Velosa Statues
Situated only a few kilometers from Mirador Las Peñitas, the Morro Velosa Statues represent the ancient kings of Fuerteventura. Created by Emiliano Hernandez, they offer a stunning visual experience during your journey and are particularly captivating for evening stargazing.
11.) Lobos Island
Lobos Island, located just off the coast of Fuerteventura, is a captivating destination suitable for a half or full-day visit. Primarily uninhabited, it features charming rustic architecture.
You can arrange a return boat tour from Fuerteventura’s Corralejo to Lobos Island. It is advisable to secure your tickets in advance to guarantee availability on the boat.
Our experience on Lobos Island was incredible; the tranquil atmosphere and beautiful coastal scene made for an unforgettable day.
12.) Playa del Castillo
Located just south of El Cotillo, Playa del Castillo is a breathtaking beach characterized by dramatic scenery. While it is ideal for surfing, caution is warranted as the waters may be quite rough for swimming.
What I particularly cherished about Playa del Castillo was the breathtaking sunset view from the cliffs, making it a remarkable setting for a serene evening.
13.) Explore the other Canary Islands
The Canary Islands offer a wealth of experiences, making them an excellent option for island hopping, as various islands are connected via boat and air travel.
Consider exploring the stunning neighboring islands such as Tenerife, Lanzarote, and Gran Canaria, each offering unique attractions and experiences.
