Located along the banks of the Hudson River, New Jersey is frequently overlooked in favor of its neighboring state, New York. Nonetheless, there are numerous exceptional experiences awaiting discovery in New Jersey.
This state boasts a variety of attractions, from historic boardwalks and renowned university towns to beautiful coastal areas, catering to diverse interests. Furthermore, it serves as an excellent stopover as you journey southward along the east coast.
During my visit to New Jersey, I was struck by the abundance of sights to see and was somewhat disappointed that I did not allocate more time for exploration. New Jersey is indeed a hidden treasure.
To maximize your visit, here are twelve stunning locations you should prioritize.
1.) Princeton
Primarily recognized for its university, Princeton is a delightful destination to visit while in New Jersey. It is conveniently situated along the route between Newark and Trenton, making it an ideal spot for a day trip.
While in Princeton, do not miss the opportunity to explore the Princeton University Art Museum, which features a remarkable collection of artifacts spanning centuries. Despite its modest size, it offers a wealth of artistic treasures.
After your visit to the museum, take a moment to observe the former residence of Albert Einstein, located at 112 Mercer Street, where he resided for approximately two decades. Please be mindful that this is private property while you admire its exterior.
If time permits, consider visiting the Princeton Battlefield State Park, which commemorates the historic Battle of Princeton from 1777 and is just a short walk from the heart of the city.
2.) Jersey City
Situated across the river from the vibrant energy of Manhattan, Jersey City offers an excellent half-day getaway opportunity.
One of the must-visit locations is Liberty State Park, which spans approximately 1,200 acres of waterfront and presents spectacular views of New York City, making it an ideal place for a leisurely stroll.
From here, you can enjoy breathtaking vistas of Liberty Island, Upper New York Bay, and the Statue of Liberty, particularly stunning during sunrise.
Following your visit to the park, explore the iconic Liberty Science Center, which houses thousands of interactive exhibits. You can easily spend days learning and can even enjoy one of the most advanced planetariums in the west, along with exciting exhibits like Eat and Be Eaten, Infection Connection, and more.
Additionally, make sure to visit the historic Jersey City Terminal, constructed in the 1800s. It is impressive and definitely worth a visit as you explore the scenic waterfront.
For a delightful meal, consider dining at Taqueria Downtown, a casual eatery acclaimed for serving some of the best tacos in New Jersey, making it perfect for an informal lunch.
3.) Trenton
As the capital city of New Jersey, Trenton presents a wealth of historical significance and a compact downtown area that merits a visit.
Be sure to explore the Old Barracks Museum, which stands as the only remaining colonial barracks in New Jersey, offering an intriguing glimpse into the history of the American Revolution.
Don’t overlook the New Jersey State Museum, which features a range of exhibits, from dinosaurs to fine art, making it a fantastic spot for history enthusiasts.
If you have additional time, visit the neighboring township of Hamilton and explore the Grounds for Sculpture, a sprawling 40-acre sculpture park and museum housing extraordinary artworks. The indoor galleries here, which number six, can easily keep you occupied for hours, so plan your visit accordingly to see all the exhibits.
4.) Camden
Situated along the Delaware River, Camden is an excellent destination in New Jersey for a historical exploration.
Within the river you will find the Battleship New Jersey, a historic vessel of great magnitude. Today, it serves as a Navy Museum, where visitors can explore a wealth of artifacts and learn about the ship’s significant past, notably during WWII, as well as observe the massive 16-inch gun turrets up close.
If naval history is not your interest, you might prefer to visit Walt Whitman’s House, located in downtown Camden and preserved as a tribute to the famous poet.
To conclude your Camden experience, cross the Benjamin Franklin Bridge and discover Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This vibrant city deserves a few days of exploration.
5.) Edison
Does this name ring a bell? Edison was named in honor of one of its most notable residents, Thomas Edison, who conducted much of his work in Menlo Park during the 1950s.
When you arrive, the Thomas Edison National Historical Park is a must-visit destination for anyone with an interest in history, innovation, or technology. The park provides an in-depth look at the legendary inventor’s home and laboratory, showcasing original artifacts and insights into his life.
The tours grant visitors access to Edison’s Glenmont Estate and the laboratory complex, which can easily occupy several hours of your time.
If you fancy a leisurely walk, head towards Eagle Rock Reservation, which boasts numerous hiking trails and offers breathtaking views of the New York skyline.
6.) Atlantic City
Located approximately two hours from Manhattan, Atlantic City is a charming vintage seaside resort known for featuring the original Boardwalk in the United States.
Stretching along eight miles of the New Jersey coastline, it’s an ideal location for a scenic stroll, a meal, and perhaps a refreshing swim on a sunny day.
Also, make sure to visit Steel Pier and enjoy the Ferris wheel and nostalgic rides that provide hours of entertainment. Afterwards, head to Absecon Lighthouse for an unforgettable view from the top.
If you prefer a quieter beach atmosphere, consider a short drive to Brigantine Beach. Although it lacks facilities, it’s a serene location for a peaceful walk along the shore. Just be cautious while swimming, as there are no lifeguards present.
If you’re feeling peckish, be sure to stop by Dock’s Oyster House, where their calamari and oysters come highly recommended.
Many visitors have mixed feelings about the Atlantic City Boardwalk. While some find it overly commercialized, others appreciate its nostalgic charm. Regardless, apply sunscreen and wear comfortable footwear, as you will be on your feet most of the day!
7.) Beach Haven
Situated on Long Beach Island, Beach Haven is a delightful destination located about an hour’s drive from Atlantic City.
Your first stop should be Fantasy Island, an amusement park where you can ride the gigantic Ferris wheel without long wait times.
Afterwards, spend some time soaking in the sun on the beautiful beachfront, enjoying the unique coastline that characterizes Long Beach Island.
For a satisfying meal, visit Tuckers Tavern for their flavorful craft beers and fish tacos that are sure to please your palate.
8.) Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area
Located on the border with Pennsylvania, the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area is a stunning area to explore.
This expansive site encompasses over 70,000 acres and features numerous trails, breathtaking waterfalls, and picturesque lakes worth visiting.
The New Jersey sectors of the Delaware Water Gap contain two visitor centers: Millbrook Village and Kittatinny Point Visitor Center. Both locations offer excellent views and a wealth of exhibits, making them worthwhile stops when entering the area. Additionally, knowledgeable staff is available to guide you toward the best trails suited to your experience and local weather conditions.
Nearby, be sure to visit the iconic Buttermilk Falls, which is highly recommended.
Moreover, consider visiting Worthington State Forest and hiking the Red Dot Trail up Mount Tammany, where the breathtaking views make the challenging hike worthwhile.
9.) Ocean City
Located approximately a thirty-minute drive from Atlantic City, Ocean City is another coastal gem that should not be overlooked. With its extensive beaches and seaside charm, it is ideal for a delightful beach day!
Stretching roughly 2.5 miles, the boardwalk offers a plethora of retro amusements and arcades, including Music and Wonderland Pier and Gillian’s Island Golf & Water Park, ensuring a fun-filled family day out.
Additionally, don’t miss Manco & Manco Pizza on the boardwalk, a beloved establishment since the 1950s, recognized for its exceptional Sicilian pizzas.
10.) Cape May
Overlooking the Delaware shoreline, Cape May is a fantastic destination to explore before catching the ferry to Lewes.
Cape May offers a variety of activities and sights, making it worthwhile to spend a few days in this charming area. To begin, don’t miss the opportunity to visit Morey’s Piers.
Morey’s Piers is packed with water parks and nostalgic amusements, stretching across six blocks along the Cape May shore. Here, visitors can enjoy bumper cars, water attractions, and indulge in the sugary treats of cotton candy and saltwater taffy.
The amusement park includes an impressive Ferris wheel that stands over 150 feet tall! After your thrilling experiences at Morey’s Piers, unwind at Cape May Point State Park. This area offers a serene atmosphere, especially while traversing the Blue Trail.
For a taste of local flavor, visit Cape May Beach, which boasts stunning views and idyllic scenery. Additionally, nearby, you’ll find the Cape May Peanut Butter Co. that specializes in delicious peanut butter products.
11.) Asbury Park
Asbury Park, located approximately 45 minutes from Edison, is a lovely place to visit, particularly for those situated in northern New Jersey. The boardwalk in Asbury Park is renowned for its beauty and is particularly enchanting at sunrise or sunset.
The beach here is delightful, boasting a peaceful and inviting atmosphere. Additionally, nearby is the Silverball Retro Arcade, which features vintage pinball machines and games from the previous century—an absolute must for those with a penchant for nostalgia.
Lastly, check the schedule at the Stone Pony, a celebrated venue known for its live music performances and vibrant atmosphere.
12.) Island Beach State Park
For nature lovers, Island Beach State Park is an ideal destination that allows for a delightful retreat from urban life. This park offers splendid beaches that are less crowded compared to those at Seaside Heights located to the north.
Ample parking is available, along with numerous pathways leading from Shore Road to pristine sandy shores.
