Exploring the Beauty of Sri Lanka: A Travel Guide

A Return To Sri Lanka

Our second visit to Sri Lanka was rather spontaneous.

Earlier in the year, our itinerary had been thoroughly packed during our previous stay, allowing us to explore a significant portion of the country in just one week. However, I found myself yearning to discover even more of what Sri Lanka has to offer.

Fortunately, around the period we had already planned to be in Asia, the idea arose to visit Sri Lanka again.

Despite not being able to secure a direct flight from London at that time (as we were just an hour away from Sri Lanka), we decided to join the trip from our current location.

Upon arrival late at night, we proceeded directly to our accommodation in the coastal town of Ahungalla, specifically at the Heritance Ahungalla.

After a welcoming ceremony involving lamp lighting (a first experience for us in Sri Lanka), followed by a quick dinner, we quickly made our way to our rooms to succumb to a much-needed and deep sleep (the result of overindulging at dinner).

The next morning, after enjoying a traditional breakfast of Sri Lankan hoppers, I determined to explore our surrounds where we would be stationed for the following days.

The Heritance Ahungalla resembles an old colonial estate, sprawling across several acres and located directly on the beach, visible from the pool area.

Exploration of the Area

Although our previous accommodations were not near the beach but rather by a river, this place did remind me of that last experience. Below is a glimpse of the surroundings.

Culinary Adventures

After a leisurely day by the pool, engaging with various cocktails (interrupted only for lunch), we made plans to meet with others for dinner later in the evening.

Cultural Show and Evening Activities

Dinner was originally intended to take place as a barbecue on the beach; however, due to the rain, we relocated to an indoor restaurant, indulging in a variety of delicious courses before heading out to witness a traditional dance performance—which I highly recommend for first-time visitors or those who haven’t had the experience yet.

The showcase culminated with impressive fire displays, including fire-breathing and fire-walking.

Post-performance, we transitioned to the bar, engaging in conversations and laughter throughout the night, further enhanced by a few bottles of wine, before ultimately retiring to our rooms.

It goes without saying; leisurely days such as these are ideal for initiating any holiday!
