Despite their geographical proximity, the cultures of the countries of the Baltic States are worlds apart. Lithuania, the last country in Europe to adopt Christianity, is packed with pagan history. Latvia features incredible landscapes and numerous cultural layers. Estonia, influenced by nearby Finland, is known for its economic success. This road trip route starts in Vilnius and ends in the historic city of Tallinn, covering over 1000km. Each stage of driving takes around two to three hours. Hence, we recommend allowing two weeks to complete the route (although it is manageable in 10 days).
Lithuania: Vilnius, Kaunas, Klaipėda, Curonian Spit, Palanga
Start your adventure in Vilnius, the capital and most populated city in Lithuania. Here, you should visit the Old Town, a blend of baroque and Gothic architecture. Explore the atmospheric museum of art and history at the Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania and Gediminas Castle, which showcases settlements dating back to Neolithic times.
Moreover, spend some quiet hours in the quarter of Užupis. The city’s vibrant spirit is perhaps most evident in this bohemian neighborhood, where creative individuals humorously proclaimed their independence by drafting a mock constitution for their republic. Consequently, the Lithuanian government embraced the joke, allowing Užupis to retain its independence in name only.
From Vilnius, make a brief stop 100km away in Kaunas, Lithuania’s second-largest city and the European Capital of Culture for 2022. The Kaunas Castle provides insights into the country’s past, while the Museum of Devils, brimming with masks and stories, outlines local traditions and folklore.
Then, drive onwards to Klaipėda (200km), which boasts quiet and unassuming beauty that quickly makes an impression. This important trading city reflects the influences of European merchants, particularly those of German and Dutch descent. From Klaipėda, take a ferry to the Curonian Spit, separating the Curonian Lagoon from the Baltic Sea. This enchanting national park and UNESCO Heritage Site consists of sand dunes, pine forests, and fishing villages. Although it can be visited as a day trip, if you’re eager to explore, allocate three days here.
The coastal city of Palanga is approximately a 30km drive from Klaipėda. It is a popular destination for a beach day on the Baltic Sea, hence expect the pier and charming streets to be bustling with visitors.
Latvia: Ventspils and Rīga
From Palanga, cross the border into Latvia, heading towards Ventspils, nearly 200km away. Ventspils is a classy coastal city steeped in Latvia’s history. Explore Ventspils Castle, the oldest castle of the Livonian Order, which houses a local history and art museum.
From Ventspils, it’s approximately 190km to Latvia’s vibrant capital city, Rīga. Rīga is endlessly busy and a hub of activity at any hour. Bars, coffee houses, theatres, and a thriving live music scene provide ample entertainment. Be sure to admire the art nouveau architecture at Alberta iela. Additionally, grab some food for the road at Rīga Central Market. Rīga Cathedral stands as the largest medieval church in the Baltics, while historic Rīga Castle was originally established in 1330.
Estonia: Pärnu and Tallinn
From Rīga, proceed north to approximately 180km to Pärnu, a cherished summer destination among Estonians. Pärnu is elegant and popular with Estonian, Russian, and Finnish tourists alike. Here, you can relax in cafés, walk along cobblestone streets, and enjoy the dune-covered beaches.
Next, continue to Tallinn, located just 120km away. The drive meanders through seemingly endless woodlands. If time permits, consider taking the scenic coastal route to make stops at various seaside locations along the way.
Tallinn is a stylish and vibrant city, filled with impressive sights such as the Gothic town hall, which dominates the Town Hall Square. Don’t forget to visit the elegant Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, an onion-domed Russian Orthodox cathedral, to admire its captivating frescoes. For a glimpse of traditional rural life, drive out to the Estonia Open Air Museum, where historic buildings and activities like blacksmithing and weaving await your exploration.
While fiercely independent, Estonia exhibits a strong influence of Finnish culture. Notably, Helsinki is only a ferry ride away from Tallinn’s shores, making it possible to visit in a day if you secure tickets in advance.

Road conditions in the Baltic States are, for the most part, excellently maintained. Traffic jams are rare, particularly outside of the main cities. Remember to drive on the right. Throughout the cities, you will find ample parking spaces at both private lots and metered spaces. However, expect to pay higher fees for parking at meters that are closer to the city center.
