Celebrate Havana’s 500th Anniversary
Five-hundred years since its founding, Cuba’s capital city remains as resilient as its rundown buildings and elegant as the vintage cars still rolling in the streets. After nearly four centuries of Spanish rule, over 50 years of US-backed governments, and 60 years of socialism, Havana’s people (Habaneros) continue to thrive and are ready to celebrate.
Here are eight ways to celebrate Havana’s 500th birthday.
Make a Wish at the Ceiba Tree
One of Havana’s most famous traditions occurs every November 16, when a large crowd gathers around a ceiba tree in front of El Templete, located on the northeastern corner of Plaza de Armas, the very spot where the city was founded in 1519.
Whether based on superstition or not, most people wait until midnight before walking three times counterclockwise around the tree and making a wish. This tradition is linked to a religious rite, with some devotees leaving coins and flowers at the base of the ceiba—the tree where the spirits of the ancestors are believed to reside.
How to participate: From 6 PM until midnight, head to El Templete and join locals for turns around the ceiba tree. Don’t forget to make a wish!
Run the Marabana Marathon
Every November, almost 5,000 participants from over 50 nations gather to take part in the Marabana marathon. Whether running or walking, this unique opportunity allows you to explore some of Havana’s most picturesque neighborhoods.
The race covers major sections of Habana Vieja, Centro Habana, and Vedado. Prizes will be awarded in several categories.
How to participate: Register on Marabana’s website or visit the Hotel Nacional de Cuba on November 8 or 9. The race is set to start at 7 AM on November 10.
Calle Obispo’s Street Festival
If you want an authentic snapshot of Havana, head to Calle Obispo during its cultural festival. From El Floridita down to the sea, the entire pedestrianized boulevard is filled with living statues, vibrant performances, and many street corner bands. The street will be alive with colorful stilt walkers dancing to the rhythm of trumpets and drums for Havana’s 500th anniversary.
How to participate: The festival will occur on November 16. Find a spot near the Ambos Mundos hotel, sip a mojito (or two), and enjoy the vibrant culture!
Watch Art and Fashion Blend at Havana Fashion Week
The Arte y Moda fashion festival, held at Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes – Arte Cubano, showcases revolutionary designs that pay homage to the country’s iconic figures and its unique elegance. Beginning in 2003, Havana Fashion Week aims to blend contemporary art with fashion effectively.
Over the past decade, the Cuban design community has flourished, presenting unique styles that reflect the vibrant culture. From Dador’s linen clothes inspired by the malecón seawall to Clandestina’s popular statement t-shirts, there is something for every fashion enthusiast.
How to participate: The fashion shows will take place at Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes – Arte Cubano from November 12 – 17, with tickets available directly at the museum.
Enjoy the Ballet
Joining the Havana festivities, the St Petersburg Ballet company will perform a special one-night-only presentation at the Teatro Nacional de Cuba.
Tickets may be limited since ballet is incredibly treasured in Cuba. If you cannot secure a ticket, an excellent alternative is the Gran Teatro de La Habana Alicia Alonso, which frequently hosts diverse performances.
How to participate: The St Petersburg ballet performance is slated for November 15 at 8:30 PM. Purchase tickets at Teatro Nacional’s website or the venue from November 4. Tickets for Gran Teatro performances are only available at the venue.
Head to a Baseball Game
Nothing compares to spending a day at the ballpark, especially in Havana, where the Estadio Latinoamericano is a must-visit. The Industriales baseball team will host a remarkable All-Star game featuring celebrated veterans of the sport. The newly installed large LED screen ensures you won’t miss any of the exciting plays.
How to participate: Estadio Latinoamericano is located near Plaza de la Revolución in El Cerro. Admission costs CUC$1 (about USD$1) and can only be purchased on game day (October 29) at the stadium.
Listen to the Habana 500 Symphony
The most lavish gala will occur when Havana turns 500, taking place at the end of the Paseo de Martí (El Prado) where it meets the malecón. Cantares a las Puertas del 500 (Songs at the Doorway) will feature a live concert by the Orquesta Sinfónica del Lyceum Mozartiano de La Habana, comprising classical pieces composed specifically for this occasion. Additionally, numerous celebrities are expected to grace the event, culminating in a breathtaking fireworks display.

Let Loose on a Havana Night
Nearly five miles (8 km) of live concerts will take place along Avenida del Puerto and the Malecón. From the Plaza de San Francisco de Asis to Salón 1830, enjoy a buffet of the finest musical acts Cuba has to offer.
Noche Habanera (Havana Night) will feature five diverse stages showcasing everything from slow-paced boleros to energetic salsa and Cuba’s newest alternative pop-rock.
