Bordeaux: A City of Enchantment

The Beautiful City of Bordeaux, France

Bordeaux is a remarkable destination for both a city getaway and an extended exploration of its surrounding countryside and vineyards. Following a visit to the stunning regions of the Dordogne, I was keen to make my way to Bordeaux, a journey we accomplished recently, inclusive of our road trip in the area, highlighted by a significant stop in Bordeaux itself. The city offers a plethora of activities to engage in, leaving visitors wonderfully spoiled for choice. This city can cater to those seeking a relaxing experience, as well as those desiring a lively and vibrant atmosphere.

With that in mind, I aim to highlight some of the must-see attractions and activities awaiting visitors to Bordeaux.

1.) See the Grosse Cloche de Bordeaux

Regarded as one of the oldest belfries in the area, the Grosse Cloche de Bordeaux is a notable landmark, easily accessible and free to visit. Constructed in 1775, this gatehouse features two clocks and a bell tower, succeeding a previous structure that succumbed to fire damage in the 18th century.

A plaque nearby denotes that ‘the bell was the bearer of all good and bad tidings to the people of Bordeaux.’ Be sure to observe both sides of the tower as there are two distinctive clocks to appreciate.

2.) See Miroir d’Eau

The Water Mirror, located adjacent to the Place de la Bourse, boasts the status of the world’s largest reflecting pool. Offering a unique view of the city, it has become one of my preferred locations for photographs. It is simply a sight you cannot overlook while in Bordeaux.

If you are in need of warmth or refreshment, make your way to 3Montbazon, renowned for their excellent brews and exceptional coffee.

Bordeaux is synonymous with wine, and one of its more contemporary landmarks is the Citée du Vin, a stunning structure located along the waterfront.

Within its walls, visitors will discover informative exhibitions regarding Bordeaux wines, as well as opportunities for tastings. A standout feature of Citée du Vin is its regular workshops, which cover topics such as wines mentioned by authors and musicians, alongside tasting experiences ideal for those not venturing out to a vineyard.

Every city has its parks, yet the Jardin Public stands out due to its expansive size and myriad attractions. Not only is it a splendid area to wander, but it also includes an arboretum, a library, and the Museum of Natural History, which warrants exploration. Allocate a day to experience all this location has to offer.

Located on the Place Champs de Mars, this park is one of the best places to unwind in Bordeaux, particularly on a beautiful summer day.

The bustling quayside market is an excellent way to spend a Sunday morning while shopping for local produce. An ample selection of stalls is available, showcasing fresh bread, vegetables, and various local goods. We ended up purchasing shellfish that were prepared before our eyes!

The market typically closes around 1 pm, so getting there early increases the available selections. This market is among the top recommendations for sundry activities in Bordeaux on a Sunday (preferably after sampling local wines).

7.) Gorge at Le 7 Restaurant

Situated within the iconic Wine City building, Le 7 Restaurant is a sensational venue offering delectable dishes, all accompanied by breathtaking views of the Port of the Moon and the surrounding cityscape.

The Musee de Vin et Negoce is Bordeaux’s Wine and Trade Museum, situated in the Chartrons area, a location rich in the history of wine trade and culture. What makes this establishment particularly interesting is its setting within the old cellars of King Louis XV’s official wine merchant. A notable stop for a tour and wine tasting.

10.) Explore Parc Bordelaise

After lunch, devote some time to discover Bordeaux’s parks. This exceptional 19th-century park, originally a public promenade, is now adorned with approximately 3,000 trees. A lovely spot frequented by locals and tourists alike during weekends.

Keep an eye out for delightful Guignol puppet shows held on many weekends and holidays in this park.

11.) Cathedrale Saint-Andre

Cathedrale Saint-Andre stands as one of Bordeaux’s most revered cathedrals, located at Place Pey Berland. Its impressive scale and magnificent architecture reflect centuries of heritage and history, including the wedding of Eleanor of Aquitaine to Louis VII, an event that can further be explored upon your visit.

If your visit coincides with particular concert timings, you might have the chance to enjoy free organ recitals or orchestra performances – a delightful bonus!

12.) Place de la Bourse

Once a highly protected area, the Place de la Bourse has transformed into an inviting public space that is a highlight of any visit to Bordeaux. Much like the Water Mirror, it is easily accessible and often encountered during city explorations. Its picturesque nature provides an excellent backdrop for photography.

At the end of a fulfilling day of exploration, consider dining at Le Pressoir D’Argent, known for offering some of the finest culinary experiences in Bordeaux.
