Top Honeymoon Destinations for LGBT Couples
There are countless incredible honeymoon options available, making it challenging for any couple to select the perfect destination for this once-in-a-lifetime trip. However, LGBT couples have additional factors to consider, including safety and the inclusivity of the destination. Consequently, the Latin America Travel Company conducted research to identify the best honeymoon destinations for LGBT couples.
To compile the rankings, the research team analyzed a variety of studies. They excluded any country where homosexuality is criminalized and ranked the countries based on six factors: marriage equality, LGBT travel recognition, romantic settings, popularity for honeymoons, and the general population’s attitudes towards love and progressiveness.
Canada and New Zealand topped the list with near-perfect scores, missing only one point in the ‘loved up’ category. They were followed closely by Australia, which made international headlines earlier this year by legalizing same-sex marriage.

By continent, the most LGBT-friendly honeymoon destinations identified are:
- Africa: South Africa
- Europe: Switzerland
- North America: Canada
- South America: Argentina
- Oceania: New Zealand
Despite progress in LGBT rights in Asia, no countries from the continent made the list. This may be due to the fact that same-sex marriage remains illegal throughout the region. However, Taiwan is set to change that by becoming the first nation in Asia to offer marriage equality, starting in May 2019.
Furthermore, even in countries like Thailand, where same-sex marriage remains illegal, tourism officials are actively working to promote the destination as welcoming to LGBT travellers. They are advocating for legislative steps towards greater rights for all and presenting Thailand as “open to every possible shade under the rainbow.”
