If you have ever wished to experience a night in an igloo, you must consider visiting the remarkable igloo in Zermatt, Switzerland. Located adjacent to the iconic Matterhorn, this unique accommodation is an experience worth pursuing for at least one night.
While the interiors may be somewhat chilly, guests can enjoy an array of warming refreshments including piping hot tea, hearty soups, and limitless supplies of hot chocolate.
Staying in an igloo is undoubtedly a memorable experience, particularly when combined with the luxury of a hot tub. There is nothing quite like being cozy in a hot tub while gazing at the sky, hoping to catch glimpses of shooting stars above the Matterhorn.
Prior to delving into details about our visit, it is essential to share some of the insights I wish I had prior to embarking on this adventure.
What is an Igloo?
Let us begin with the fundamentals that may not be familiar to those residing in warmer climates. An igloo is a structure fashioned entirely from ice, traditionally used as a shelter for nomadic hunters. In Switzerland, these igloos are constructed annually to form a unique ice hotel beneath the stunning snow-capped mountains.
Location of the Igloo in Zermatt
The location of the igloo is essentially at the foot of the iconic Matterhorn, a mountain renowned for its unique silhouette that even appears on the Toblerone chocolate packaging.
To arrive at the igloo, the most convenient option is to take the train. After arriving in Zermatt, you can board the Gornergrat railway, which takes you up the mountain.
The stop to disembark is Riffelberg station, where you will meet the organizing team from the Riffelhaus Hotel.
Activities Available at the Igloo
Upon arrival, guests will be guided on a brief 10-15 minute walk across the breathtaking snowy terrain to access the igloos. For safety purposes, individual travel to the igloos is prohibited; guests must be escorted by the team. Following a safety orientation, visitors are free to explore this enchanting environment.
Once inside the igloo, guests have the option to visit the bar for a warm beverage. A variety of wines, hot drinks, and soups are available to ensure comfort. Following a refreshing break, guests can embark on a guided snowshoe trek using headlamps to navigate the surroundings.
After participating in these activities, guests can unwind in a hot tub, which is a welcome comfort. Additionally, each igloo is uniquely designed, with some featuring private hot tubs.
Later in the evening, around 8 PM, guests are treated to an exquisite cheese fondue dinner. Sitting in the igloo, indulging in a delightful fondue, creates a magical atmosphere, making it a meal that will leave a lasting impression.
Sleeping Conditions
Surprisingly, the sleep quality in the igloo is quite satisfactory. Initially, there were concerns about the potential difficulty of sleeping in such an environment. However, the provided sleeping bags are insulated for warmth, suitable for temperatures down to -40°C. Once cocooned in the sleeping bag, you will feel securely warm.
During our stay, we opted for an igloo without an en-suite facility, necessitating a brisk journey to the heated toilet facilities located outside. For those considering this experience, I highly recommend booking an igloo with an attached toilet for added convenience.
You will be woken up at 7 AM with a warm cup of tea delivered directly to your sleeping bag.
Temperature Insights
During our visit, temperatures dipped to around -20 degrees Celsius outside, which felt quite frigid. Fortunately, upon entering the igloo, temperatures rise to a more comfortable range of 0°C to -3°C. This temperature shift is truly significant and enhances comfort levels.
No need for worry, as there is also a heated area available should guests feel too chilly during their stay.
Cost of Accommodation
Pricing may vary based on the day of the week and the specific room type selected. For the latest price information, please refer to the official website here.
Packing Recommendations
Be sure to prepare for frigid conditions, but only pack a backpack. Suitcases are not allowed, so make your selections judiciously.
For clothing, include waterproof and windproof jackets, warm attire, thermal layers, two hats, a scarf, quality gloves, and additional insulating layers. When selecting footwear, opt for robust snow or waterproof boots to keep your feet warm, as everything can feel cold in -20°C temperatures.
Additionally, remember to pack extra socks, sunglasses, sunscreen, and swimwear for the hot tub.
Who Should Consider Visiting?
This experience is ideal for anyone, unless a strong aversion to snow exists—you may want to reconsider!
Room Types Available for Reservations
The igloo accommodations vary in design annually, with a new artistic theme each year. The themes for the 2017-2018 period were inspired by mythology.
The available room categories include: Standard Igloo, Romantic Igloo, Romantic Igloo Plus, Romantic Family Plus, and Romantic Suite (which features its own hot tub).
Operating Period of the Igloo
The igloo remains operational annually from December to April. For a detailed account of our experiences during the 24-hour period spent there, you may find further insights shared below:
