Discover Bahia’s Southern Coast: A Tranquil Paradise

Bahia, one of the largest states in Brazil, offers a diverse array of sceneries and cultures. The southern coast is particularly notable for its rich experiences. Travel from majestic mountains to serene beaches, from stunning waterfalls to vibrant cities, and from charming rural villages to acclaimed surfing spots. With the longest coastline in Brazil, the region is a paradise filled with pristine sand, towering coconut trees, and incredible wildlife.

For those seeking relaxation, southern Bahia is the ideal destination. Charming towns adorned with colonial architecture and delightful pousadas make for the perfect backdrop. Additionally, from October, humpback whales migrate to the nearby waters to breed and give birth. The following are our favorite spots in southern Bahia to unwind and embrace the slower pace of life.

Prado

Prado is an historic town known for its fishermen’s market and one of Brazil’s oldest churches. This laid-back destination is famous for its annual gastronomy festival, held at the popular restaurant Beco das Garrafas. Make sure to savor local delicacies, particularly seafood dishes like camarão na moranga (shrimp in pumpkin) and budião (local fish) at the renowned Jubiabá restaurant, inspired by the famous Brazilian literary classic by Jorge Amado.

Cumuruxatiba

Cumuruxatiba is a bohemian village popular among backpackers throughout Latin America. Known for its cozy accommodations and local artistry, this town boasts calm, warm waters and welcoming beaches. Relax on golden sands at iconic hotspots like Moreira and Barra do Cahy, where you can often find locals playing volleyball or lighting bonfires by sunset. Additionally, a short 12 km drive from Cumuruxatiba takes you to Cahy’s scenic beach, set against dramatic cliffs.

When hunger strikes, enjoy wonderful meals at local establishments like Mama Africa and Sambura Duzé, offering delectable fish, shrimp, and octopus dishes in a laid-back atmosphere.

Corumbau

Although Corumbau may appear unremarkable at first, its charm lies in its hidden gems. Discover rustic restaurants like Canal do Pampo, where local fishermen serve freshly caught lunch. Ponta do Corumbau beach is breathtaking, and this area, located near the Aldeia Pataxó (an indigenous community), remains rooted in traditional fishing culture.

Spend your days relaxing at sand-side bars, and treat yourself to dinner at either Vila São Francisco or Vila Naia.

Caraíva

Caraíva is often compared to Bali in Indonesia; visiting requires some effort, but is worthwhile for witnessing the confluence of river and sea. This quaint village, which restricts vehicles, is best enjoyed on foot or by bike. Revel in the starry nights at vibrant bars like Satú Beach Club or Bar da Praia, where local musicians perform forró, a traditional Brazilian music style. Don’t miss out on the delicious ginger drink called ‘Netuno’ at Vila do Mar or the classic ‘pastel’ at Boteco do Pará.

Keep in mind that Caraíva can become bustling in January when numerous digital influencers flock to welcome the new year.

Travel Logistics

Visiting these stunning destinations necessitates careful planning. If arriving via Rio de Janeiro or São Paulo, connect to either Porto Seguro or Salvador in Bahia; Porto Seguro hosts the closest international airport featuring flights from major cities across Brazil. From Porto Seguro, you can opt for a boat trip to Caraíva or catch a bus to Prado. Various boat trips also transport passengers south along the coastline from Caraíva to Prado. Should you wish to explore beyond these locations, a car is recommended, as some routes entail navigating unpaved roads stretching approximately 80 km (depending on your chosen path) through lush tropical landscapes.

Before setting off on your beach adventure, ensure your yellow fever vaccine is up to date—this is mandatory for international tourists visiting Brazil. Additionally, don’t forget to pack sunscreen, sunglasses, and insect repellent.
