Explore Iconic Filming Locations of Big Little Lies

For lovers of the popular TV series Big Little Lies, it is not just the incredible relationships forged by characters like Madeline, Renata, Bonnie, Celeste, and Jane that keep viewers enthralled. The epic settings of Monterey, Big Sur, and Carmel-by-the-Sea feature prominently in the show, igniting wanderlust among fans.

Old Fisherman’s Wharf

In the first season, characters Jane, Madeline, and Celeste often bonded at the fictional Blues Blues cafe. While Blues Blues may not exist, Paluca Trattoria does. Located on the atmospheric Old Fisherman’s Wharf filled with shops and local seafood markets, Paluca served as inspiration for the Blues Blues set in the show.

Moreover, there are other amazing cafes and restaurants worth exploring in the area. Alvarado Street Brewery is a favorite spot for enjoying excellent craft beer and delicious bar food.

Monterey Bay Aquarium

In the second season of Big Little Lies, be on the lookout for the Monterey Bay Aquarium (which also made a cameo in the first season). This aquarium is considered one of the best in the world, providing a mesmerizing experience for visitors. Its three-story kelp forest tank holds 2000 gallons of water and replicates the natural conditions just outside.

Plan to spend a significant part of the day overlooking the fascinating creatures that fill our oceans, particularly the enchanting jellyfish.

Del Monte Beach

In Season 1, Jane often found solace at Del Monte Beach, a picturesque location that is part of Monterey State Beach. This area is popular for surfing and has fire pits available for sunset s’mores making (and if you don’t know what you’re missing with s’mores – check it out).

Colton Hall

One significant plot point from Season 1 of Big Little Lies highlighted Madeline’s dedication to the production of Avenue Q. When her neighbors gathered to debate the controversial show, it occurred at Colton Hall. This longstanding landmark in Monterey was the site of California’s first constitutional convention in 1849.

If California history intrigues you, consider visiting the Custom House, where the US flag first flew, formally marking California’s annexation from Mexico.

Lover’s Point Park in Pacific Grove

Admittedly, romantic relationships in Big Little Lies are complicated, yet ironically, Lover’s Point featured in several episodes during the first season and continued to attract attention in season 2. This charming park, located just outside Monterey, is ideal for enjoying a picnic with a view. Consider picking up a Thai lunch box from Zab Zab before heading a few minutes north.

After your picnic, don’t miss the opportunity to visit the Monarch Grove Sanctuary, where thousands of migratory butterflies gather between November and February.

Garrapata State Park

While watching Big Little Lies, viewers often ponder where the Monterey 5 reside. The characters frequently drive across Bixby Bridge into and out of Big Sur and spend time at Garrapata State Park. If you seek stunning views of steep cliffs, crashing waves, and misty shorelines, this is the place to be.
