Vietnam is the world’s second largest coffee exporter, and its vibrant cafe scene is experiencing a significant renaissance. One of Southeast Asia’s fastest developing economies, Vietnam boasts a young population and over a century of rich coffee traditions.
Leading the charge is the southern metropolis of Ho Chi Minh City, home to some of the country’s best cafes: from historic streetside stalls to plush lounges perched 50 stories high.
Nameless Stocking Coffee
Established in 1954, this unbranded coffee shop is among the few places where you can still sample what locals call ca-phe vot (net coffee) or ca-phe vo (stocking coffee). These names originate from the unique mesh filters that resemble women’s stockings. In an era when metal drip filters were scarce, stocking coffee was created by steeping finely ground coffee through these fine mesh nets; with sweetened, condensed milk added, it results in a rich, almost caramel-like beverage.
This cafe operates 24/7; however, it’s recommended to arrive early to witness the bustling morning ritual as patrons on motorbikes queue in the narrow alleyway for their morning fix. Despite its elusive nature, you can find it at 330/2 Phan Dinh Phung, Phu Nhuan District.
L’Usine Le Thanh Ton
L’Usine Le Thanh Ton is an instagrammable coffee spot that marries history with modern aesthetics. Drawing inspiration from Old Saigon, this trendy coffee shop and boutique serves up some of the city’s finest drip coffee, paired with indulgent red velvet cupcakes, savory canapés, and even craft beer. You can choose to relax on the ground floor adorned with vintage tiles and plantation shutters or venture upstairs to enjoy splendid wood slabs reclaimed from underwater trees in a tranquil atmosphere. A boutique featuring unique, Vietnam-inspired gifts and clothing by local designers adds to its appeal.
Coffee with a View
If you’re eager for stunning vistas of Ho Chi Minh City, skip the observation decks of the city’s tallest buildings and opt for coffee at these sky-high cafes. Blank Lounge, located on the 75th and 76th floors of Landmark 81 (Vinhomes Central Park), is among Southeast Asia’s highest lounges. You can secure a seat along the wraparound windows or relax on the outdoor terrace that overlooks Saigon from 76 stories in the sky. The menu offers both drip and machine-brewed coffees, alongside delightful brunch-style dishes.
Another excellent option is Cafe EON, found on the 50th floor of Bitexco Tower, the city’s second-tallest building. Here, you can enjoy Italian coffee alongside magnificent views through expansive windows. For an even more exclusive experience, head up one level to the 360-degree fine-dining restaurant, featuring intimate tables for two in ‘Couples Corner’. The adult-only 51st-floor lounge offers a unique twist on an espresso martini, combining vodka, Kahlúa, espresso, and chocolate sauce, making for an invigorating experience that comes with fantastic views.
Maison Marou
The uniquely designed Maison Marou serves as a tea salon, chocolate shop, and a miniature chocolate factory. Although ordering coffee is certainly an option here, their hot chocolate is the Marou brothers’ specialty. Crafted from single-origin Vietnamese chocolate vigorously shaken with hot milk, this frothy, intense, and slightly tart, not-too-sweet concoction is truly life-changing. The cafe’s quirky yet polished interior will captivate design enthusiasts, while a large window lets customers observe the chocolate-making process.
Villa Royale
Nestled within a charming room filled with interesting antiques, Villa Royale beckons with its quaint ambiance right in the bustling heart of Ho Chi Minh City. Here, you can savor Lavazza coffees or choose from 50 varieties of TWG teas served in beautifully patterned cups, amidst an eclectic mix of treasures from around the globe—including traditional tattoo needles from Myanmar and Buddhist monk scrolls from Laos. Many sweet and savory treats are freshly prepared on-site using highland products from Dalat, a region known for its cool temperatures that facilitate the growth of strawberries and blueberries.
The Vintage Emporium
Emulating Vietnam’s French colonial past, the Vintage Emporium (95B Nguyen Van Thu) offers a contemporary twist on nostalgia, showcasing vintage-inspired tiles and 70s memorabilia. The District 2 location (1 Duong so 39) is situated in a grand villa adorned by a lovely trellised arch. Both cafes provide hot and cold coffees accompanied by an all-day breakfast menu featuring Mediterranean-inspired dishes that are not only visually appealing but healthy too.
Partea English Tearoom
Resembling a scene from a whimsical children’s storybook, Partea provides a charming ambiance dedicated to all things British. While staff may hesitate to whip up a cup of mocha coffee (available iced or hot), most patrons arrive for the tea experience. You can choose your own cup and saucer while selecting from a diverse wall of tea offerings—from English Breakfast to Caramel Popcorn. Enjoy the experience amidst cuckoo clocks, vintage suitcases, and whimsical teapots. Tea is served in pots, paired with exquisite scones topped with jam and clotted cream or a delightful high tea set. Try to secure a seat by the window that overlooks pedestrian-friendly Nguyen Hue Street, especially enchanting at night. After satisfying your thirst with tea, explore the stunning art deco building that houses Partea—most of its nine floors have been transformed into trendy cafes, unique boutiques, and quirky shops.
