Slovenia is a relatively small European country that is nestled between Italy, Croatia, Hungary, and Austria. There are numerous attractions, activities, and delicious food, making Slovenia an ideal holiday destination or an excellent addition to a road trip in Europe.
From the moment I heard about the picturesque Lake Bled and outstanding skiing opportunities in the Julian Alps, I was determined to visit Slovenia. While I may not be a talented skier (to put it mildly), I still enjoy the experience immensely!
Here are some of the finest activities, sights, and culinary experiences to enjoy while visiting this charming country:
1.) Explore the Julian Alps
While most people think of skiing in the stunning resorts of France and Switzerland, it’s important to highlight the impressive skiing conditions Slovenia provides.
Top tip: While summer attracts many visitors, the winter months are perfect for experiencing the best ski slopes when snow is most consistent. Head to the Maribor Pohorje resort to sharpen those skiing skills!
2.) Discover the Old City Centre of Maribor
Maribor is situated in the Drava Valley and is renowned for its wines. Known for its white grape varieties, this region features plenty of opportunities to wander and explore, particularly in the old city area.
Top tip: A stroll toward the Drava River provides a delightful view of this beautiful renaissance Slovenian city, along with the stunning Maribor Castle.
3.) Visit the Oldest Vine in the World!
Located in Maribor is the oldest vine across the globe, recognized by rigorous scientific evaluation and certified by the Guinness Book of Records. This vine, older than 400 years, produces exceptionally high-priced wine (over €10,000 per bottle), yet surprisingly, the quality is rather mediocre.
Top tip: Instead of splurging on this famed bottle, opt for one of the many delicious wines from the nearby winery following your visit to the old vine.
4.) Eat Conceptually at MAK Restaurant
For a unique dining experience, visit MAK Restaurant, known for its inventive cuisine and intimate atmosphere. Expect a menu that evolves and surprises you!
Top tip: Keep an open mind; the menu is typically not disclosed before your meal begins to enhance the enjoyment of a variety of dishes!
5.) Discover the Rolling Countryside of Slovenia
One of the best ways to appreciate Slovenia is to venture into its picturesque hills and countryside located just a short distance from major cities.
Top tip: While traveling south from Maribor to the enchanting Lake Bled, be sure to take in the beautiful rolling fields and the striking landscapes along the way, allowing you to experience both in a single day!
6.) Visit a Winery!
No trip to Slovenia is complete without visiting a vineyard to savor exceptional wines! Embark on a tour of one of the many family-run wineries sprinkled throughout this stunning country.
Top tip: As these wineries are predominantly family-owned, you can expect warm hospitality alongside delightful wines and abundant food.
7.) Dine Alfresco
While there is an abundance of fantastic places to eat in Slovenia, you can’t go wrong dining outdoors at one of the numerous family-owned restaurants available in almost every town.
Top tip: Venture to the area around Pohorje, where you can discover breathtaking scenery and natural wonders that are perfect after enjoying a culinary feast.
8.) Visit the Oldest Slovenian Town of Ptuj
Ptuj is a charming town showcasing the historic and rustic charm of Slovenian life. Enjoy exploring its historical center, and consider visiting its hidden wineries located beneath the streets.
Top tip: Watch out for the quirky drinking babies decorating the wine barrels around town!
9.) Try a Different Type of Wine!
With a variety of unique wines to explore around the world, Slovenia has its own offering of Asparagus Wine, prevalent across the region.
Top tip: If you’re feeling adventurous, why not try making your own Oak Leaf wine with a quirky Welsh recipe?
10. Discover Ptuj Castle
Take a quick uphill walk from the center of Ptuj town to the remarkable Ptuj Castle, where you can revel in breathtaking views of the surrounding region.
Top tip: Plan your visit to Ptuj Castle around sunset for a magnificent perspective of the town paired with a stunning Slovenian sunset!
11.) Try Award-Winning Wines at Dveri Pax
Dveri Pax is one of Slovenia’s notable vineyards, renowned for its remarkable wines worldwide. Explore their beautiful estate and dine in their transformed wine cellar restaurant!
Top tip: The floor of the cellar has a slight slope, historically assisting wine flow, so don’t worry if you feel a little lightheaded as you enjoy a fantastic meal!
12.) Discover the Hidden Wine Vaults of Maribor!
Welcome to the hidden wine vaults of Maribor, recognized as the largest wine vault globally. Explore its extensive 11 km tunnel system, all designed for ample wine storage!
Top tip: Stroll through the many tunnels and unique wine tanks, offering a fantastic opportunity to indulge in the true essence of Maribor’s winemaking tradition.
