Exploring Charlottenburg Palace and The Berlin Cathedral in Berlin, Germany
On our final morning in Berlin, I thought it was the perfect opportunity to visit a place we had missed out on during our previous trip: Charlottenburg Palace; and to also finally explore the Berlin Cathedral.
After a quick taxi ride, we arrived at the Palace, only to discover it was closed as it was a Monday. I regretted not checking the opening hours and simply assumed it would be open since it was a popular destination. Moreover, scaffolding covered the usual beautiful Palace facade.
Fortunately, the grounds around Charlottenburg Palace remained open, and rather than letting disappointment take over, we chose to explore the area.
The Palace grounds are a major reason to visit Charlottenburg Palace, especially during summer when the gardens are lush and vibrant.
After a leisurely stroll around the Palace grounds, we decided to head into town to meet friends at the Gendarmenmarkt Christmas Market, stopping by the Brandenburg Gate as we made our way.
With temperatures dipping, we enjoyed steaming cups of gluhwein laced with a dash of Amaretto for good measure. This combination has convinced me that there is no better way to enjoy gluhwein!
After catching up with friends, we made our way to the Berlin Cathedral, having checked in advance to ensure it was open—and thankfully, it was!
Upon entering the Berlin Cathedral, I was pleasantly surprised. The interior was stunning—significantly more intricate than I had imagined. While the structure looked impressive from the outside, I had previously associated German churches with more monumental, yet simpler architecture.
So many exquisite details unfolded within the Cathedral. I couldn’t resist taking endless photos, each angle revealing something new to capture.
Time passed quickly, and soon, it was time for us to head back to the hotel to collect our belongings and make our way home.
Amid the hurry, I seized a brief chance to explore the labyrinthine vaults beneath, diving into their mysteries before concluding our sweeping journey through Berlin.
