Belgium is an incredible country to explore! While it might be relatively small in size, there are stunning places to visit throughout the country, with Ghent being a prime example. This vibrant city has something for everyone, showcasing a plethora of activities and sites to explore.

After incredible places like the stunning city of Brussels and the historic Bruges, Ghent is easily one of the top destinations to add to your Belgium travel itinerary. It’s small enough to explore, making it perfect for a short break if time is limited.

This is why I wanted to share some of the best things to do in Ghent during your visit. The city is rich in history and offers a perfect stop as part of a broader trip.

1.) Find Gravensteen Castle

Visiting Gravensteen Castle is one of the best things to do in Ghent. Built in the 12th century for the Count of Flanders, it is both stunning and historical, making it one of Belgium’s finest castles. Inside, be sure to take the audio tour; it’s quite entertaining and informative.

Wander through the castle’s rooms and battlements, immersing yourself in the medieval history. After your visit, consider dining at the Oak Restaurant for a delightful 8-course meal.

2.) Visit Saint Bavo’s Cathedral

Saint Bavo’s Cathedral, over 800 years old, is an iconic landmark in Ghent that is definitely worth a visit. Stunning architecture adorns both the interior and exterior, making it a significant site to include in your walk.

Inside, witness the famous Ghent Altarpiece known as the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb, one of the world’s earliest oil paintings from the 15th century. Despite the cathedral’s small city setting, its magnificence is truly remarkable.

3.) See the MSK Art Gallery

The MSK Art Gallery resembles a building from Ancient Greece with its grand columns. Yet, here in Belgium, it’s a wonderful venue to explore European artwork. Inside, you’ll discover many pieces from Belgian and Dutch artists, including a tryptic by Van Eyck currently undergoing restoration.

The collection spans from the 14th century to present day, making it a great spot for art lovers, especially on a rainy day. However, if art isn’t your thing, this may not be the right attraction for you.

4.) Explore Patershol

Patershol is an extraordinarily picturesque area of Ghent, making it one of the best places to explore. Historically, it was known for its leather tradesmen, and today, it’s filled with delightful restaurants.

Be sure to check out t’Klaverblad, a fantastic French restaurant ideal for lunch. If you’re only a bit peckish, visit one of the traditional pubs to enjoy a Belgian beer accompanied by some kroakemandels, a delicious fried pea snack.

5.) Visit Saint Peter’s Abbey

Even though it’s a bit far from the city center, Saint Peter’s Abbey is a fascinating historical site worth visiting. Within the abbey, explore the various exhibitions and halls, although the audio tour may come off as somewhat cliché.

If you feel hungry, consider dining at Allegro Moderato, where you can enjoy a delightful wine-paired seasonal menu.

When visiting Ghent, you’ll be surprised by the diversity and deliciousness of the cuisine. Gruut Beer is a local specialty that’s definitely worth tasting, and you mustn’t miss trying Stoverij, a delightful Belgian beef stew, or Waterzooi, a fish stew with deep historical roots.

If you’re extremely hungry, head over to Du Progres on Korenmarkt 10, known for its exquisite Chateaubriand and varkenswangetjes, making for a hearty meal.

One of Ghent’s oldest buildings, Saint Nicholas’ Church, is a sight you can’t afford to miss. Its sheer size makes it a prominent feature in the historic city center.
