If you’re new to burlesque shows, you’ll soon discover that this experience differs significantly from any other type of performance. Due to the sensual nature of burlesque, it is crucial to observe proper etiquette as an audience member. Here are a few tips to consider for your next visit:
- Never touch the performer unless specifically invited; this is their profession, and touching them during performances is disrespectful and violates their consent.
- Understand the venue’s tipping policy, as some shows allow tips while others do not. Bring small bills to be prepared!
- Many shows prohibit photography, so check the rules with the performer and/or the venue before taking any pictures.
- Cheer loudly! Burlesque shows encourage (respectful) audience interaction, so feel free to applaud your favorite performers, especially after a particularly captivating move.
