France is a brilliant country to explore, featuring many historic cities, as well as gorgeous regions like Provence and Brittany that are spectacular to visit. Not only that, but France also boasts some of the best beach holidays, making it an ideal coastline to discover while in Europe.
Over the last decade, we’ve visited France numerous times and have always been charmed by its diverse coastline. Each experience varies significantly, whether you are exploring the likes of Bordeaux or venturing along the Mediterranean Coast. It truly is beautiful.
To help you maximize your visit to France, I’m sharing some of the best beach holidays in France that I believe you’ll adore. Enjoy your visit to France!
1.) Menton
Perched beautifully on the French Riviera, Menton is a vibrant town renowned for its picturesque and colourful seafront. It’s an ideal beach destination while exploring the southeastern regions of France, and it’s well worth spending a few days delving into the town itself and enjoying its beautiful beach.
For those interested in exploring Menton’s rich heritage, take a visit to Basilique Saint-Michel and stop by the Chapel of Pénitents-Blancs. These locations are iconic, and the artistry inside is breathtaking to behold.
If you’re seeking a quintessential beach experience, visit Plage des Sablettes, which I believe is the top beach in Menton. It may be smaller than Plage du Borrigo, yet it holds a special charm. Just remember to apply plenty of sunblock, as the Mediterranean winds can be quite deceptive.
2.) Bandol
Located not far from Toulon, Bandol is often an overlooked gem when considering the best beach holidays in France. Because it is not as widely known outside of France, it tends to be less crowded than tourist hotspots like Cannes or Saint Tropez.
Though the beaches in Bandol are relatively small, they are delightful for anyone who appreciates a beach in an urban setting. For those seeking tranquility, consider Liouquet Beach located just outside of town—do keep in mind that it is a nudist beach.
3.) Martigues
Located on the south coast of France, Martigues stands out as one of the best beach holidays in France, especially if you’re in close proximity to Marseilles.
It’s a quick drive (approximately 20 minutes) from Martigues to the surrounding beaches, making it an excellent choice for a day or afternoon trip to enjoy a refreshing dip in the Mediterranean Sea.
For a quick beach experience, check out Plage Sainte-Croix. Although small, it’s perfect if you’re stopping by for just an hour or so.
If you’re planning a whole day at the beach, you can head over to Plage du Verdon. This beach offers a larger area with plenty of cafes, restaurants, and a lovely promenade to enjoy.
4.) Cannes
Cannes is stunning to visit and is arguably among the best beach holidays in France. There’s a reason why celebrities flock here after all!
Known worldwide for its iconic film festival, Cannes is a holiday paradise featuring breathtaking beaches, excellent dining options, and a vibrant nightlife. However, be prepared for potentially high costs, especially during peak summer months.
For a fantastic beach day, visit Croisette Beach located close to the harbor. This beach, while somewhat smaller, provides a great atmosphere for a day by the sea. You’ll find numerous restaurants and cafes lining the beachfront, making access to dining options incredibly convenient.
If you prefer larger spaces, check out Plage du Midi. This beach is much more expansive and features ample roadside parking. Just a heads-up: the parking can get crowded on weekends!
5.) Antibes
Situated approximately midway between Cannes and Nice, Antibes is celebrated for its summer climate, characterized by a microclimate that ensures warm conditions, even during the shoulder seasons.
Once in Antibes, don’t miss Gravette Beach, conveniently located next to the harbor walls. If you’re in search of a larger beach, consider heading to Juan Les Pins Beach, which offers more extensive sunlounger rentals and cafes along the shoreline.
With its stunning coastline, Antibes ranks among the best beach holidays in France, making it a perfect summertime destination!
6.) Saint-Tropez
Saint Tropez, often referred to as the playground for the wealthy, might not spring to mind as a preferable destination due to its immense popularity.
Nonetheless, it is important to recognize that certain locations enjoy their fame for valid reasons, and Saint-Tropez is one of them.
Though it ranks as one of the top beach holidays in France, be prepared for potentially higher costs compared to some lesser-known locations.
When planning your trip, consider visiting outside of July and August for more affordable accommodations.
While in Saint-Tropez, be sure to experience Canoubiers Beach, the more tranquil Moutte Beach, and the expansive Tahiti Beach. Note that the latter beach has historically been recognized as a naturist beach, while Pampelonne Beach further down offers a mixed beach experience.
All these stunning sandy locations make for an enjoyable beach holiday experience in France.
7.) Marseille
Marseille tends to evoke mixed feelings about visiting due to its rugged charm. But this ‘rough around the edges’ city can actually offer more affordable beach holiday options in France.
One of the top beach destinations is Prado Beach, or Catalans Beach, if you wish to stay within close proximity to the harbor.
8.) Nice
Nice has earned a reputation as one of the best beach holidays in France during the summer.
Mentioning a trip to Nice often evokes images of luxury, indulgence, and summertime fun. It’s delightful when a beach holiday also brings so many additional elements beyond beautiful beaches. Nice offers visitors a variety of exciting activities, and it’s one of those cities in France where the shoreline is as captivating as the city itself.
Oh, and don’t forget to check out this epic half-day trip from Nice to explore Monaco and Monte Carlo along with the stunning town of Eze. Be sure to snag your ticket prior to your arrival, as spots fill up rapidly during peak times.
9.) Biarritz
This stunning location came highly recommended by a friend who couldn’t stop raving about it, making it impossible not to visit. The beach here is truly exquisite.
While in Biarritz, for one of the most expansive stretches of beach, visit Ocean Beach. It’s a fantastic spot and easily ranks as one of the top beach holidays in France if you find yourself on the west coast.
Always keep in mind that the beaches here are cooler than those on the Mediterranean coast.
10.) Sérignan
This enchanting destination is one of the lesser-known spots in France, yet the beautiful beach and its exceptionally friendly residents consistently attract visitors, making it a frequent feature in our travel dreams.
In terms of beaches, a must-visit is Valras Beach, conveniently located right in front of town.
If you’re after a quieter beach experience, consider making your way to Grande Cosse Beach. It has fewer amenities, so it’s wise to carry along your own snacks and drinks.
