Summary of the Itinerary
Norway’s beautiful fjords are the stuff of legends. They are a reason in themselves to visit this amazing country; however, Norway offers so much more than stunning fjords.
With a rich tapestry of history, culture, and picturesque natural sights, one of the best ways to truly experience all that Norway has to offer is by exploring its rugged West Coast.
The West Coast is home to some of the most scenic drives and train routes in the world. Following multiple trips back to Norway’s rugged West Coast, we have compiled this 9-day itinerary for exploring some of the best aspects of Norway.
DAY 1:
Fly into Stavanger. Depending on your arrival time, take some time to explore this compact, walkable city.
Stay: Scandic Stavanger City Hotel, conveniently located in the city center and within reach of ferry stops to explore the fjords.
DAY 2:
Early Morning: Embark on a cruise or a RIB boat tour through the Lysefjord. Both options offer breathtaking views.
Late Afternoon: Hike to Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock). It’s a manageable hike offering spectacular views of the Lysefjord.
DAY 3:
Morning/Early Afternoon: Pick up a rental car and drive to Bergen, a beautiful road trip lasting about 4–5 hours with plenty of picturesque sights.
DAY 4:
Morning: Prepare for an extraordinary train journey on the NSB train from Bergen to Myrdal and then connect to Flåm.
DAY 5:
Morning: Explore Flåm at your leisure before making your way to Ålesund.
DAY 6:
Morning: Visit Fjellstua/Mount Aksla Viewpoint for breathtaking views of Ålesund. Also, take a Wildlife Sea Safari to the bird island Runde to see puffins and seals.
DAY 7:
Morning: Drive from Ålesund to Solavågen to catch a ferry to festøy, then continue the scenic journey to Ørsta and Sæbø.
DAY 8:
Morning: Depart from Hotel Union Øye and drive to Hellesylt to catch a ferry to Geiranger. Experience the stunning views while sailing through the UNESCO World Heritage Geirangerfjord.
DAY 9:
Morning: Depart Geiranger for Eidsdal, taking in the views from the Eagles Road. Catch the ferry from Eidsdal to Linge and then drive to Ålesund airport to conclude your magnificent road trip.
