Over the last five years, Dubrovnik seems to have become even more popular, and to be honest, it’s really easy to see that. If you want to avoid some of the crowds, think about visiting out of the peak summer months when it gets super busy.

1.) Walk the City Walls

As you wander, you’ll spot around 17 towers and even St. John Fortress. The historic walls were built in the 13th century to protect the city and its inhabitants.

2.) Wander through the Old Town
After experiencing the city walls, your next stop should be wandering deeper through the Old Town itself. Along the way, you’ll see everything from Gothic to Renaissance-style architecture at famous landmarks like Sponza Palace, the Dominican Monastery, and the stunning church of St. Joseph.

It’s considered Dubrovnik’s oasis, especially during the hot summer months, now a protected nature reserve, which forms part of the city’s largest area of parkland. Boats frequently depart from the Old Port, making it easy to visit this beautiful location.

To ensure a good seat, arrive an hour or two earlier and take the time to relax and enjoy the stunning sunset views.

If you’re looking for a tranquil getaway from Dubrovnik, head over to Mljet National Park, renowned for being one of Dalmatia’s most stunning islands. You can easily rent a catamaran or take a boat from Prapratno to Sobra to explore the island by bike. There is an abundance of delicious dishes to try while in Dubrovnik. On my last trip to Croatia, I hardly stopped eating! If I had to narrow my favorites, I would absolutely recommend trying Black risotto made with cuttlefish ink, often accompanied by cuttlefish or sometimes squid.
Don’t forget to sample Orahovac, a unique walnut liqueur, and for a sweeter option, try Drenovac liqueur, which is often more gentle on the palate.
