Discover Virgin Hotels’ First European Property: Exclusive Inside Look

Overview of Virgin Hotels’ Expansion

Since Virgin Hotels opened its first location in Chicago in 2015, it has expanded into four other U.S. cities: Dallas, Las Vegas, Nashville, and New Orleans. This summer, however, the brand will make its European debut with two properties in Scotland: Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Virgin Hotels Edinburgh Debut

Virgin Hotels Edinburgh is set to open in the Old Town area near The Royal Mile on June 1, 2022. This hotel, located in the historic India Buildings built in 1864, will feature 222 rooms along with multiple dining options for guests seeking a blend of local culture and modern luxury.

According to company insights, the ethos of this location is “unmistakably Virgin,” showcasing local cultural traditions while incorporating modern upgrades and luxurious elements synonymous with the brand. One standout feature is the Eve Branson suite, designed under the bell tower of a restored medieval church; this suite features what is touted as the “unofficial tallest canopy bed in the world.” Another suite, Richard’s Flat, is named after the founder and offers a lounge and bar area.

Furthermore, guests can enjoy the Commons Club, characterized as a “modern social club” that merges work and play. The design includes striking red decor reminiscent of a vintage train carriage, featuring an elegant red sofa that enhances the social atmosphere.

The Funny Library Coffee Shop will also be featured on-site, boasting areas designed for both productivity and socializing. This unique space includes a coffee counter and an inviting library and lounge atmosphere, complete with a cozy fireplace and carefully curated books. Each book carried in the hotel aims to resonate with guests, incorporating local themes and whimsical titles, promoting a sense of warmth and comfort.

Virgin Hotels Glasgow Opening

The second European outpost of Virgin Hotels will open later this summer in Glasgow. This location holds personal significance for founder Richard Branson, as it is closely connected to his wife’s roots. Situated at 236-246 Clyde Street in the city center, the hotel promises panoramic views of the River Clyde. Its strategic position places it within Glasgow’s shopping district, adjacent to the St. Enoch Shopping Centre and within walking distance to the Gallery of Modern Art and Glasgow Central station.

Virgin Hotels Glasgow will offer 240 rooms, featuring both the Chamber and Grand Chamber Suites. These accommodations include a Dressing Room area, which creatively combines a hallway, closet, and bathroom, along with a Sleeping Lounge designed to encourage relaxation or productivity, catering to both leisure and business travelers.

Future Plans in New York and Miami

Additionally, Virgin Hotels is preparing for the opening of Virgin Hotels New York City, a 38-floor property complete with a rooftop pool and bar, set to debut this summer at 1227 Broadway near Manhattan’s Madison Square Park. Furthermore, Virgin Hotels Miami is scheduled for a 2025 opening in the city’s Financial District, continuing the brand’s commitment to embracing local culture across its offerings.

“Virgin Hotels has established a beloved brand amongst many, always ensuring that all offerings embrace and showcase the local community culture for all travelers to enjoy; and this property will surely do the same,” Branson expressed about the Glasgow location.
