Bringing some luxe accommodations to the rustic area surrounding Grand Canyon National Park, the brand-new Backland is now taking reservations ahead of its Aug. 16 opening.
1. Overview of Backland Glamping
This 160-acre glampground near Williams, Arizona, features five tented suites outfitted with all the essentials and tucked into ponderosa-pine forests—an idyllic destination located just 60 miles south of the national park’s South Rim entrance. In other words, there’s no pitching of tents involved; everything is ready for your arrival. Each tent is equipped with luxury linens atop a king-size bed, electricity, and a private full bath with a shower and low-flow toilet.
Wake up to morning coffee thanks to your own coffee maker or uncork a bottle of wine stored in your personal fridge. A patio with each tent broadens the usable space, accommodating between four and six people. This setup is perfect for families with small children, couples traveling together, or a girlfriend getaway.
2. Luxurious Accommodations
What’s intriguing about all of Backland’s indoor spaces is that they shelter you from the blistering-hot Arizona heat without obstructing the stunning views. For instance, there’s a 16-foot-wide panoramic window and a skylight in each tent, allowing you to stargaze while staying cozy. Moreover, the lobby—far from the log-cabin aesthetic you’d expect—looks like a free-standing glass house with walls of windows that open out onto a private lake and beach. Scandi-style furnishings and light fixtures in creams and beiges intentionally do not distract from the breathtaking nature surrounding the area.
3. Unique Features and Activities
Speaking of the lake, activities for guests include paddleboarding, kayaking, and fishing, with all the gear readily available for rent at no cost. Furthermore, guests can benefit from daily free yoga classes held on the beach, providing a deeper immersion in nature. Relaxing on lounge chairs on the beach makes it easy to unwind with a book or take a blissful nap in the sun.
If exploring beyond the property into surrounding national forested lands appeals to you, Backland offers e-bikes for rent. Additionally, a two-hour guided horseback-riding experience can be arranged, and the two miles of trails on the property are ideal for an afternoon hike or morning jog. Throughout the property, guests will appreciate sustainable features like chicken coops for eggs, beehives for honey, and native tree orchards bearing fruit. Other sustainability initiatives include composting, rainwater harvesting, and using eco-friendly cleaning supplies, ensuring that only five percent of the land will be built on—keeping the remaining 95 percent open, wild, and free.
4. Culinary Delights and Relaxation
For guests seeking a bit of pampering while visiting one of the national parks, one of the tents is reserved for spa services. Additionally, a sumptuous restaurant at Backland will serve farm-to-table cuisine. In keeping with the theme, the restaurant also features walls of windows, allowing diners to take full advantage of the amazing views while they enjoy their meals.
The glampground is set to open on Aug. 16, 2022, with nightly rates starting at $525.
