You see, once upon a time, this area of London was terrorized by ‘Jack the Ripper’ and the cruelty inflicted upon its most famous resident, the ‘Elephant Man’. Thankfully, its murky past has long since faded, and today, we’ve got a heap of wonderful restaurants, art galleries, and a wealth of history to explore in this vibrant area.
To provide some context, Whitechapel has long been a working-class area of London, home to a significant Jewish community as well as many Commonwealth residents. Additionally, don’t forget the influx of hipsters from Shoreditch who have also settled here. 🙂
Like numerous other London neighborhoods, Whitechapel has transformed into an exciting melting pot filled with attractions, making it a fantastic place to explore. Consequently, you may find it hard to narrow down your favorites when it comes to the best things to do in Whitechapel.

Let’s get this clear… these tours are perfect for those interested in dark tourism or the eerie history of London.
Step back in time and embark on one of the original Jack the Ripper Tours that occur most evenings in Whitechapel. Collaborate with a Victorian police force and citizens of Victorian London as you attempt to solve one of the most notorious serial killer cases in the city’s history. However, let’s be honest, there’s a slim chance you’ll catch the culprit now!
Top tip: Purchase tickets online to secure your spot, especially during weekends and holidays when demand is high.
And remember, don’t accept grapes from strangers… that’s how the Ripper lured in his victims!
2.) Gorge on the best curries
Whitechapel and the nearby Brick Lane are famous for hosting some of the best curry houses in London.
For example, Tayyabs was established over 40 years ago at its current location on Fieldgate Street.
Famed for its incredibly delicious Punjabi cuisine, it’s a paradise for those who have worked up an appetite while exploring. At Tayyabs, you can enjoy a main meal and drinks for under £20.
One of their standout dishes is the Dhal Gosht, made with lentils, lamb, chili, garlic, and masala. Truly, it’s one of the best things to do in Whitechapel if you relish a hearty curry.

In the early 20th century, this gallery showcased some fringe artists who have since gained international recognition. Indeed, the gallery even displayed works by Picasso back in 1938. Although the Whitechapel Bell Foundry is closed now, it remains a fascinating place to visit in Whitechapel and is one of London’s hidden gems.
Furthermore, the Whitechapel Bell Foundry holds the title of the world’s most famous bell producer, which is remarkable in itself! With a history spanning over 500 years, this small foundry crafted iconic bells such as Big Ben (yes, that one in Westminster) and the Liberty Bell, a revered symbol of American independence.
6.) Visit the Truman Brewery
In recent years, the Old Truman Brewery on Brick Lane has been transformed into a vibrant hub filled with vintage shops, microbreweries, and delectable wine pop-ups that will keep you entertained throughout the evening. Stroll through the many unique stalls and indulge in food, drink, and exploration!

While you’re here, make your way to Treves & Hyde for delicious duck and beef terrines. Alternatively, if you are looking for some of the best pizza in the area, hit up Pizza Union (Aldgate). For an enticing brunch, pop into Grounded to enjoy their exquisite poached eggs and salmon dishes.

8.) Spitalfields Market
If you’re on the hunt for a vintage market filled with crafts, antiques, and countless hidden gems, make your way to Spitalfields Market. While it’s not technically in Whitechapel, it’s just a short walk away and serves as a fantastic stop while you’re exploring this side of London.
Stroll through the various stalls, seek out some delightful goodies, but don’t be surprised if the deals aren’t as bargain-friendly. It leans more towards the ‘fashionable’ rather than the ‘flea’ market vibe.
9.) V&A Museum of Childhood
Technically located in Bethnal Green, the V&A Museum of Childhood is a stone’s throw away from Whitechapel, making it an honorable mention for the top things to do in the area.
Once inside, you can explore the vast exhibitions showcasing dolls, historical furniture, and an array of charming Victorian handmade toys. This museum provides a relaxed atmosphere quite different from the British Museum or the Natural History Museum.
