- Experience the hospitality and kindness of the local people.
One destination I had always dreamed of visiting in Norway was Tromso. Nestled high in the Arctic Circle, Tromso is one of the highest cities you can explore, not just in Europe but also in the world!
Unlike some other Arctic locations, there is no worry about encountering polar bears here. This allows you to enjoy the stunning Northern Lights without the hassle of finding a remote spot to set up a tripod in the middle of the night. But I digress…
On our journey to Tromso, we made a brief stop in Oslo. As we picked up our rental car and headed into the city, nightfall began to set in. It was then that we realized our bags had not arrived with us!
This luggage issue would have been manageable had we not arrived during a long holiday weekend, leading to a lack of available personnel at the airport, meaning we had no access to our essentials amidst the freezing temperatures!
With everything important (including winter coats, tripod, and other necessities) packed in that suitcase, I found myself in quite a situation with no proper clothing, just wearing my comfortable travel clothes.
Heeding the unfortunate situation, we made our way to the Sommarøy Arctic Hotel, where we’d be staying for a few nights. Here, we indulged in some much-needed warm food and drinks.
Upon check-in, I was reminded of another missing item – my pajamas (a small comfort I usually bring for restful sleep). However, these small inconveniences were quickly overshadowed as we discovered the Northern Lights were showing!
Observing the Northern Lights so early in our journey was simply spectacular, making me forget entirely about my lack of pajamas. I collapsed into bed that night, exhausted but incredibly exhilarated!
The next morning arrived, bringing with it the realization of the generosity the Norwegians have. After explaining to the receptionist about our luggage situation, several locals generously gathered clothing for us, ensuring we were warmed up with jackets and more.
The kind-heartedness we experienced in Tromso was nothing short of touching. The people truly look out for one another in this community—it was a delightful surprise that attested to the spirit of Tromso.
After reflecting on our experience, you might wonder why we didn’t simply purchase new clothing. Unfortunately, this holiday season meant there were no shops open, as many quaint store owners had left to enjoy their own holidays throughout Norway.
Wearing our new warm clothes and feeling incredibly grateful, we took a drive to explore Sommarøy and get better acquainted with the beauty of Tromso.
Even in the coldest of seasons, the beaches exude beauty with their clear blue waters and fine sandy shores that beckon visitors, distinct from the ordinary pebbly coastlines.
The picturesque backdrop is often complemented by mountains and the occasional sighting of reindeer, encouraging us to stop and capture the essence of this natural wonderland.
As we drove around, we marveled at the untouched scenery that carries a sense of untouched beauty, concluding our time in Tromso with memories to cherish forever.
