Top 10 Things to Do in Aberdeen, Scotland
Nestled on the northeast shores of Scotland, Aberdeen is a pretty historic city to visit. Moreover, it has a cozy, yet lively city center that’s great for a day trip. There are heaps of the best things to do in Aberdeen dotted all across the city, so an overnight stay might be best.
Furthermore, in lots of ways, Aberdeen acts as a gateway or feeder city. What this means is that many visitors either arrive by train or plane in Aberdeen to explore more of Scotland. This is especially true for destinations such as Cairngorms National Park, Balmoral, and the stunning Dunnottar Castle, which is just down the coast.
To help you make the most out of your visit to Aberdeen, here are the top places you really can’t miss. Have an amazing time discovering Scotland.
1.) University Buildings
One of the things I love most about Aberdeen is its university buildings. They are gorgeous. Once you’ve arrived in Aberdeen, be sure to see Marischal College on Broad Street.
Now, it’s no longer run as a university building, but the structure dates back to the 1800s and is well worth seeing. In fact, it is one of the largest granite buildings in the whole world.
Best of all, it’s located not too far from Provost Skene’s House. This delightful museum is perfect for learning more about Aberdeen as a city and its influences. You’ll likely spend around 40 minutes inside, and it’s well worth it if you’re interested in Aberdeen’s rich history.
Afterwards, head over to King’s College, which is right next to King’s Lawn. Like Marischal College, you can’t go inside (unless you’re a student), but it’s totally lovely to spot while you stroll through Aberdeen.

One of my favorites is Duthie Park, particularly for the David Welch Winter Gardens. It’s splendid to stroll around, especially to see the cacti and tropical plants that typically wouldn’t thrive in Scotland.
3.) His Majesty’s Theatre
Aberdeen boasts an impressive array of performance and theatre venues that are fantastic to experience when in the city. I’m unsure if it’s due to the city’s university or it being a regional hub, but the venues are remarkable.
If musicals are what you’re after, then His Majesty’s Theatre is a must-see. Grab tickets before arriving to enjoy performances that range from Matilda to the Rocky Horror Picture Show— it has something for everyone! Alternatively, if you don’t have time for a show, consider joining one of their guided tours of the venue. The interior is stunning.
If theatre isn’t your scene, head over to The Blue Lamp. It’s a cozy little venue that’s favored by locals. Throughout the year, they feature a range of performances, including folk music, comedy, and jazz. You’ll find something new every season.
Don’t forget about The Lemon Tree, too. It is a vibrant live music venue that accommodates around 500 people. Established in the 1930s, it has hosted numerous performances from both local and international artists.
4.) Aberdeen Art Gallery
Visiting the Aberdeen Art Gallery, housed within Cowdray Hall, is undoubtedly one of the best things to do in Aberdeen, especially for art history lovers.
The gallery features an impressive collection of 17th to 20th-century paintings that are ornate and intricate. It showcases works from many talented artists, most of whom are Scottish, including William Dyce, John Philip, Thomas Faced, and more.
Moreover, many exhibits change seasonally; hence, each visit to the gallery will offer a unique experience. The gallery reopened in 2020, with many interactive exhibits added. We cherished our visit.

5.) Mercat Cross
Dating back to the 1600s, Mercat Cross is a significant landmark to see while wandering around the center of Aberdeen. Located at Castle Gate opposite the old tolbooth building, it’s easy to spot and you won’t miss it.
While you’re there, keep an eye out for the carvings of the Stuart monarchs that once ruled.
From here, it’s a short walk down Union Street towards St. Mark’s Church (though it’s closed inside). It’s a lovely building to see.
6.) Aberdeen Seafront
Strolling along Aberdeen Harbour is one of the best things to do on a sunny day. Begin in the Footdee area and stroll north towards Codona’s.
The beach here is stunning, although it can get windy; so be prepared for that.
Speaking of Codona’s, this is another of Aberdeen’s local favorites. Established in the 1970s, it has become somewhat of an institution.
These days, you can enjoy rides like the Galleon Pirate Ship or take a plunge down the Dead Man’s Drop, or try your hand at the Private Island Adventure Golf.
There is also a wide variety of indoor games available, such as bowling and arcade games. This makes it an ideal destination if the weather turns inclement.
If the weather is calm, keep your eyes peeled for dolphins! Bottlenose dolphins call this area home, and they are fairly easy to spot if you’re patient.

From here, you can observe the fierce waves that can be whipped up by North Sea winds. It’s mesmerizing but remember to steer clear of the coastline during heavy winds; the North Sea is no laughing matter.
7.) Seaton Park
If you’re based in the northern part of Aberdeen, then make sure to visit Seaton Park. It’s a perfect place for a leisurely stroll and is one of the largest parks in the city.
Here, you can stroll through delightful outdoor gardens and even spot the Wallace Tower, which dates back to the 1600s. This historical monument was relocated to protect it from the city’s expansion.
8.) Aberdeen Gin Distillery
Hidden in the city’s heart, the Aberdeen Gin Distillery is one of the city’s pioneering distilleries in almost a century. You can experience a unique guided tour with a master distiller. You’ll have the chance to create your own gin, using herbs and flavors sourced from across Scotland. It’s a lot of fun and takes approximately three hours.
This is a wonderful opportunity to delve into the intricacies of gin production while enjoying a drink or two. Oh, and don’t miss trying their Bramble Gin!
9.) Dunnottar Castle
Seeking a day trip from Aberdeen? Then consider taking a tour to Dunnottar Castle, which departs from the center of the city. We absolutely loved visiting Dunnottar Castle, and it’s definitely worth joining a tour or taking the train to Stonehaven.
While it’s not located in Aberdeen itself, visiting Dunnottar Castle is essential for anyone wanting to delve into the region’s history. The castle dates back to the Early Middle Ages and this tour will take you through the breathtaking Cairngorms National Park along the way.
10.) Johnston Gardens
Another beautiful garden to visit in Aberdeen is Johnston Gardens. This lovely place offers a serene atmosphere for a peaceful stroll. The trail features seasonal Scottish blooms that bloom in spring and summer. You can also visit the Gordon Highlanders Museum, located right next door. It showcases historical military artifacts from throughout the centuries.
Overall, it’s one of the best things to do in Aberdeen if you’re looking for a relaxing day.
