Must-Visit Viking Sites in Ireland
Hey, it’s Henry here! You might remember from my last trip with the GoTravelDaily team to Barcelona?
This time, however, I’ve ventured a little closer to home. All the way over to gorgeous Ireland!
To be totally frank, I’m a little ashamed to admit that this trip marked my very first visit to the green shores of Ireland, despite being a 24-year-old, Guinness-loving enthusiast of everything Irish.
This was something I was buzzing with excitement about. Subsequently, I planned to remedy this soon after St Patrick’s Day, with an adventure around the eastern areas of Ireland filled with Viking heritage and history.
1.) Explore Dublin
A good place to start any trip to Ireland is in Dublin, a city that appears to burst with energy, regardless of the time of year or the weather. The city also boasts a fantastic foodie scene worth experiencing.
As you wander the streets of Dublin, keep an eye out for paving slabs embedded with bronze artefacts, illustrating items discovered during city excavations.
2.) See Dublinia
Dublinia Viking Museum is an excellent place to delve into the actual history and timeline of the Vikings and their impact on Ireland. Engage with live actors demonstrating Viking weaponry, everyday life, and more.
3.) Stroll around Waterford’s Viking Triangle
Just a short drive to the beautiful city of Waterford, which boasts a rich Viking heritage. Remember, Waterford is the oldest city in Ireland and was founded by the Vikings!
4.) Explore the King Of The Vikings
The “King of the Vikings” virtual reality tour in Waterford was one of the highlights of my trip. It transports you into a digital Viking world, showcasing adventures through towns and castles with immersive storytelling.
5.) Visit Reginald’s Tower & Medieval Museum
Reginald’s Tower, originally built by the Vikings, serves as a museum today, demonstrating rich history and fascinating Viking artefacts. Don’t miss the Medieval Museum next door that expands on local history.
6.) Experience the Follow The Vikings Project
This exciting show features gymnasts, fire breathers, and captivating performances narrating a Viking warrior’s conquests. It’s a unique mix of storytelling, combat, and traditional Viking culture.
7.) Dun Laoghaire Harbour
The breathtaking coastline of the Ancient East is not to be missed. Visiting Dun Laoghaire Harbour and walking along the pier provides insight into the Viking’s maritime activities.
8.) Wicklow
Fans of the TV series “The Vikings” will recognize the stunning Wicklow Mountains, known for their resemblance to the fjords of Norway. It’s an ideal location for a day out surrounded by natural beauty.
9.) Explore the Museum of Ireland, Dublin
This museum is a must-visit with its permanent Viking exhibition, featuring artifacts that give a glimpse into the Viking lifestyle, including tools, weapons, and personal effects.
10.) Enjoy a tipple and grub at The Reg, Waterford
For a genuine Waterford experience, visit The Reg pub, where you can indulge in delicious local foods and iconic beverages while enjoying the historic ambiance.
End your day with a classic pint of Guinness, a delightful part of any Irish experience!
